The Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns open the 2016-17 NBA season Wednesday night at the Talking Stick Resort Arena.
The Sacramento Kings have not made the playoffs since Rick Adelman was head coach and patience seems to be running thin due to the lack of progress. The Kings have their star in DeMarcus Cousins and reliable players such as Rudy Gay, Arron Afflalo and Darren Collison. (Collinson will be suspended for the first eight games of the season) Ben McLemore has shown flashes of promise and Ty Lawson could be a steal if he’s able to get his personal life together. The Kings have enough talent to at least compete for an outside shot at the playoffs but have won no more than 33 games in eight straight seasons. Progress has to be made this season in Sacramento or pieces could be moved. The Sacramento Kings have lost three of their last four regular season openers.

The Phoenix Suns also haven’t made the playoffs in a while but hope health and a faster tempo can make them competitive. Devin Booker looks like he’s coming into his own in his second season, while Eric Bledsoe and Brandon Knight give the Suns plenty of guard depth and scoring. T.J. Warren is a 51 percent shooter in two seasons and Marquese Chriss is a dark horse Rookie of the Year candidate. Returning long time Phoenix player Leandro Barbosa also gives the Suns even more punch off the bench. The Suns may have issues on the defensive side and may be sloppy at times, but Phoenix is going to score a ton of points and force teams to keep up. The Phoenix Suns have lost four of their last six regular season openers. P.J. Tucker is questionable with a back injury.
The Kings are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. NBA Pacific and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Suns are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 Wednesday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Kings are 5-2 ATS in the last 7 meetings in Phoenix and 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings overall.
The Sacramento Kings have won five of the last six games against the Phoenix Suns and have scored 105 or more points in four of those five games. The Kings also have the best player on the floor in Cousins, and he's going to be eager to get his team off to a quick start after coming up short time and time again. The bottom line is neither of these teams play defense, so having extra points is where the value is at.
