With the preseason officially underway, it’s time to start checking in on the NFL a little more often in preparation for the regular season. That said, there are plenty of storylines out there that will weigh heavily on teams throughout their campaigns this year, so let’s take a closer look at some of the noteworthy news out there this morning. Here’s the latest.

Young Signs with Pack: Likely the biggest story from the NFL yesterday was the Packers’ addition of much-maligned QB Vince Young as Aaron Rodgers’ backup. It’s a surprising move to some, as Young hasn’t played in the NFL since 2011. (He spent time with the Bills before last year but was cut.)
There are several benefits here for Green Bay, and relatively minimal risk. It’s a one-year deal, and even though he’s had his share of missed opportunities, Young appears to be focused and ready to contribute. His mobility will aid the Packers greatly in prepping for San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick and Washington’s Robert Griffin III, who Green Bay plays in their first two games.

Robert Griffin III, QB, Washington Redskins: Speaking of Griffin, let’s check in and see what he’s been up to recently. The young QB has been visibly anxious during interviews recently, indicating that he’s ready to take on a heavier workload than the 7-on-7 drills he’s been running.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan maintains that the team will bring Griffin along slowly, however, so we may not see an upgrade to 11-on-11 work until at least next week. That said, it’s hard to imagine Griffin’s recovery going much better, as he’s still expected to be just fine for Week 1--and that’s was a difficult scenario to imagine just a few short months ago.

Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans Saints: The Saints’ receiving corps received a big boost on Monday when Colston was activated off the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. The team also signed Steve Breaston and Brent Leonard to help fill out their roster.
It’s been a pretty bad week for New Orleans receivers. The team is still awaiting word on the severity of Joseph Morgan’s knee injury, as well as Andy Tanner’s ailing shoulder. Now that Colston is back in the mix, things are finally looking up.

Danario Alexander, WR, San Diego Chargers: Bad news for the Chargers receiving corps this morning. Alexander was injured in practice yesterday with a torn ACL in his knee. He will be out for the rest of the season. It’s a big blow to San Diego, as Alexander was a huge contributor during the latter part of 2012. Expect to see more of Robert Meachem in his absence.
