The Line: Kansas City Chiefs -1.5 -- Over/Under: 40 See the Latest Odds
The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers face off on Friday in a week 2 preseason battle between one of the best and one of the worst teams from a year ago.
The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to pick themselves up from the bottom and they have several new pieces to try and get that done. The Chiefs fell in week one to the Saints and they are looking to continue to put their pieces together. QB Alex Smith was 7 of 8 in his KC debut while Chase Daniel was 6 of 10 and Ricky Stanzi was 5 of 12 as the Chiefs didn’t have a touchdown pass but were sacked four times. Jamaal Charles had just five carries for 13 yards but he scored a touchdown as Shaun Braughn averaged 4.3 yards per carry, Knile Davis averaged 1.4 yards, and Cyrus Gray 1.5. Charles tweaked his knee on Monday but it doesn’t look to be serious but it could affect his status for this game. Davis, Charles, and Gray were also the leading pass catchers but Anthony Fasano had two grabs and Dexter McCluster had one as Dwayne Bowe is just returning to practice this week. The Chiefs defense allowed 427 yards with 308 of them coming through the air. Vince Agnew had eight tackles, Orie Lemon had seven, and Hussain Abdullah ad six while Nico Johnson had two tackles and Dontari Poe had one. The Chiefs should be improved but they clearly have some work ahead of them.

The San Francisco 49ers came a few yards short of winning the Super Bowl last season and they don’t seem to have much to care or worry about this preseason. The 49ers offense was non-existent in a week one los to Denver though the key layers should se more action here. Colin Kaepernick was 4 for 4 passing and ran just once for six yards while Colt McCoy was forced to leave the game with a hand injury after going 3 for 7 leaving the bulk of the work to Scott Tolzien who was 15 of 26 with an interception. LaMichael James averaged 3.4 yards per carry and Anthony Dixon averaged 3.9 as Frank Gore wasn’t in action neither was Kendall Hunter. Vance McDonald led the 49ers receivers with four catches and Kassim Osgood had three while Austin Collie and Anquan Boldin had two catches each and Vernon Davis had one. The real story at receiver for the 49ers in A.J. Jenkins who was a first round pick a year ago and is in the dog house and may not make the squad this season. The 49ers defense allowed just 228 yards but Patrick Willis is out at least two more weeks. Michael Wilhoite had 10 tackles and Eric Reid and Michael Thomas had six each and Aldon Smith and Donte Whitner had one each and Dan Skuta had two sacks. The 49ers have little to gain or prove this preseason and will use it to iron out a few wrinkles and to sort out what few roster spots might be up for grabs.
The Chiefs are headed in the right direction, it would be tough for them to be headed in a worse one than they were a season ago. The 49ers are just well ahead of Kansas City and while we may see the Niners offense struggle some more, it won’t be easy for the Chiefs and my take here is the 49ers get the win.
