Week 2 of the NFL preseason has officially been completed, inching us ever closer to the regular season opener. On Thursday, the third preseason week begins, and of all the warm-up games, this round is the one to watch. We’ll see starters playing the majority of the games and get to watch new wrinkles in game plans being unveiled. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the headlines from around the league this morning. Here’s the latest.

Steelers-Redskins Wrap-Up: For a second-week preseason game, last night’s Pittsburgh-Washington matchup featured a lot of noteworthy happenings. First off, the Steelers’ rookie RB Le’Veon Bell injured his foot after just one series (and that’s a new injury alongside his ailing knee), the most prominent of three Pittsburgh backs to go down.
On the other side, Redskins backup QB Kirk Cousins also injured his foot, heading a cast of Washington injuries: Barry Cofield, Aldrick Robinson, Leonard Hankerson and Keiland Williams were hurt as well. None of those sounds too serious, though.
MRIs and tests will be coming today, so stay tuned. Oh yeah, and the Redskins won, 24-13.

Jags Name Starter: Chad Henne’s week isn’t starting off very well. Jaguars coach Gus Bradley named him the backup QB yesterday, handing the reins to Blaine Gabbert. The catch? Gabbert is out with a hairline fracture in his throwing thumb and will miss the rest of the preseason. That leaves Henne to finish out the remaining two rehearsals, then grab a clipboard when the regular season begins. Still, there’s no harm in playing well and potentially igniting a QB controversy later down the line if Gabbert falters. We’ll see what happens.

Dez Bryant, WR, Dallas Cowboys: Cowboys fans may have gotten a little concerned after seeing the heavy wrap on Bryant’s thumb at practice yesterday, but the star receiver insists it’s no big deal. He’s been dealing with a jam in the digit during camp, and there’s speculation that he may have banged it during the team’s practice.
Bryant is expected to carry a heavy load this season. He heads a talented receiving corps and will be trying to top his 1382-yard, 12-TD year in 2012.

Daryl Richardson, RB, St. Louis Rams: Just a quick note on Richardson today: he’s been named the Rams’ Week 1 regular-season starter, beating out fellow RB Isaiah Pead for the job. Pead started last week’s preseason game but couldn’t get much going. Richardson, however is expected to be a breakout star in the St. Louis backfield.

Rob Gronkowski, TE, New England Patriots: We’ve got a new estimate on Gronkowski’s timetable this morning, and it’s relatively optimistic. There’s a report out there that says he’s on track for a return in the middle of next month, which would mean Week 3 or 4. That’s great news for the Patriots, who are in desperate need of help within their receiving corps. Gronkowski is working his way back from forearm and back surgeries.
