NFL Updates: Preseason Week 3, Jets' QB News and More
August 24, 2013
The past couple of days have served as an NFL appetizer; today comes the main course. We’ll be treated to 10 preseason games today, and with this being Week 3, we’ll get our closest barometer toward the regular season expectations as well. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the stories making headlines around the league this morning and check in on some noteworthy names out there. Here’s the latest.
Seattle-Green Bay Notes: To put it bluntly, this one was pretty ugly--especially for the Seahawks. They were extremely mistake-prone against the Packers, with 182 yards in penalties all together. Still, Seattle got a big performance from their backups and edged out Green bay 17-10.
It was mostly a second- and third-string audition for the Pack, however, as most of the starters had disappeared before the second quarter was over. Most notably, Aaron Rodgers only played one series.

Chicago-Oakland Notes: The Bears-Raiders game was a tale of two halves. The first belonged to the Bears: Jay Cutler, Matt Forte and Alshon Jeffery were in fine form, putting up 27 points before halftime. After the break, however, the game belonged to the Raiders. Namely, Terrelle Pryor was great in replacement of an ineffective Matt Flynn, going 7-for-9 for 93 yards and a TD. Darren McFadden sat out, but reportedly could have played if it were a regular season game.
The Bears ultimately took the win 34-26.
Steelers-Eagles Trade: One major story from yesterday involved the Steelers and Eagles. Pittsburgh acquired RB Felix Jones from the Eagles in exchange for OLB Adrian Robinson. The Steelers have been in search of healthy backs ever since projected starter Le’Veon Bell went down with a mid-foot sprain in the team’s second preseason game (he’ll reportedly be out 6-8 weeks). Jones joins an RB roster that includes Isaac Redman, Jonathan Dwyer, LaRod Stephens-Howling and Baron Batch, none of whom has looked especially promising this season.
Meanwhile, the Eagles get Robinson, who came on as an undrafted rookie last season and was a contributor on special teams.
Jets QB Battle: The last of the NFL’s starting quarterback battles has yet to be decided in New York, but both Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez will have ample opportunity to make a case for themselves tonight against the Giants. The rookie Smith will get the start, with Sanchez likely to replace him in the third quarter. We may (finally) get a decision on the starter tomorrow.
So far, the Jets brass has been pretty mum on which player has the edge, and at this point we’d call it a coin-flip. Sanchez has the edge in experience and familiarity with the team (not to mention guaranteed money owed), but the organization has given second-round draft pick Smith plenty of opportunities to take the reins. The team is desperate to open a new chapter and distance themselves from the Butt-Fumbling ineptitude of last season.
Preseason Week 3 Remaining Schedule: Starting in the late afternoon, we’ll be seeing some fast and furious gridiron action stretching into the wee hours of the morning. These are the games to watch, as in most cases we’ll see the starters for at least a half. Here’s a look at the weekend schedule, and where you can find the nationally televised games.
