After what’s been a very long off-season of waiting, the NFL is officially back as of tonight. We’ll be kicking things off (literally) with a highly-anticipated Broncos-Ravens matchup, then moving ever closer to the main slate of games booked for Sunday. While we’re waiting for the action to officially begin, let’s take a closer look at some of the major storylines developing around the league. Here’s the latest.

Jets QB Situation: We’ll start things off with our personal favorite lovable losers, the New York Jets. The team’s quarterback situation has been in a state of flux all off-season, but gained a little bit more clarity yesterday. The Jets announced that rookie second-round pick Geno Smith would be starting the opener against the Buccaneers, which was how most anticipated things would go, given the fact that incumbent four-year starter Mark Sanchez is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Speaking of Sanchez, there’s a report out there that says he’s concerned the team is planning on putting him on Injured Reserve, effectively making a passive-aggressive end to his tenure as a Jet. That sounds a little devious, but it’s certainly a possibility in the New York soap opera. Coach Rex Ryan seems to be getting elbowed out gradually as well, so if nothing else it should be an entertaining season at MetLife.

Manuel is Good to Go: While we’re on the subject of AFC East quarterbacks, let’s visit with Bills rookie E.J. Manuel, who will be the team’s starter for their Week 1 opener against the division rival Patriots. The announcement came yesterday, which is welcome news for Bills fans, as they would have had to cheer for undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel had Manuel’s knee not been ready for a return.
He’ll face a tough test in his first career regular-season start. The Patriots enter 2013 as the overwhelming favorites to run away with the division (once again), and Manuel will have the unpleasant task of keeping up with Tom Brady on the scoreboard.

Bowe Eyes History: Here’s an interesting little nugget out of Kansas City. The Chiefs’ No. 1 receiver Dwayne Bowe is coming into Sunday’s game against Jacksonville needing just a pair of catches to become second on the team’s all-time receptions list. He currently stands at 415, and Henry Marshall occupies the spot ahead of him with 416.
If Bowe wants to become the all-time receptions leader in Chiefs history, he’s got a long, long way to go. Tony Gonzalez holds that distinction, nabbing 916 passes from 1997 to 2008.

Week 1 Schedule: We’ve got several intriguing matchups on the schedule for the NFL’s opening week, so it should be a very entertaining series of games. Here’s a quick look at what’s in store this weekend, and the networks where you can catch your favorite teams.
