TV:

Another week of exciting NFL action is in the books and as expected another group of Survivor Pool participants have said goodbye to another season. The Cincinnati Bengals fell flat in Cleveland, and the Baltimore Ravens fell in Orchard Park against the Bills leaving a handful of folks in tears and others seething at the fact that their Survivor Pool numbers are dwindling. Here's a look at week five and the top plays, traps, and under the radar plays:

Week 5 NFL Survivor Pool Picks

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

Atlanta Falcons vs New York Jets

The Falcons are coming off a sloppy loss on Sunday Night Football against the New England Patriots but face a much different monster this weekend on Monday Night Football as they host the Jets. New York is playing way above their talent level at the moment but were dealt a dose of reality last week against the Tennessee Titans who made things look painless in Nashville. Atlanta boasts a very strong offense that should rip apart the Jets secondary and while the Falcons defense struggled at times against Tom Brady, they get Geno Smith in this one. Smith has been a turnover machine for the Jets this season and against a Falcons defense that should see the return of Asante Samuel expect another long outing for Smith and the Jets’ offense.  Atlanta should cruise in this spot and while it may not be the best pick in terms of holding on to stronger teams, I think this is one of the safer picks this weekend.

St. Louis Rams vs Jacksonville Jaguars

Last week I gave the Jags the benefit of the doubt heading back home to face a divisional rival and for my loyalty and thinking that Jacksonville would show up for a game they laid an egg and lost by 34 points. So at no point during the rest of the season will I back Blaine Gabbert and the rest of the putrid Jaguars offense despite the fact they’re getting Justin Blackmon back. Jacksonville heads to the road to face a Rams team coming off a hard fought loss to the 49ers in St. Louis last week and I think the Rams much like every other team the Jags have faced thus far, will have their way with them. St. Louis has an underrated defense and after getting exposed last week I expect cornerback Cortland Finnegan to have a bounce back effort. The Jags could very well be worse than the 0-16 Detroit Lions and until they can show some glimpse of fight I am going on the other side. St. Louis is an enticing bet here as they’re not a team many will use later in the year and against the Jags this is probably the one and only time you can lock in with St. Louis.

Pool Breakers:

Kansas City Chiefs vs Tennessee Titans

Kansas City has been the league’s biggest surprise this season as they’ve raced out to a 4-0 record and look like a legitimate playoff team through the first quarter of the season. They have made very few mistakes offensively, and their defense is emerging as one of the best in the game as they head into Tennessee to face the Titans. The Titans will be without Jake Locker behind centre as he sprained his hip against the Jets last week leaving the offensive responsibility on the shoulders of Ryan Fitzpatrick. While Fitzpatrick is a downgrade from Locker it isn’t as if he is completely useless as he enjoyed some success in Buffalo and should do a good job managing the Titans offense that will likely become even more run heavy than normal. This game could very well be a blowout for Kansas City if they can get pressure on Fitzpatrick and create turnovers but the Titans are quietly enjoying a nice season and for what it’s worth I would stay away from using the Chiefs in this spot and wait for them to return back home.

Denver Broncos vs Dallas Cowboys

This is an intriguing matchup as Peyton Manning and the Broncos have been ridiculous to watch as they’ve put up video game numbers offensively and have absolutely thrashed teams in every regard this season. The Cowboys meanwhile continue to be one of the most inconsistent teams in the league and you never know which Cowboys roster is going to show up. While Manning and the Broncos should have success once again this week I can see Dallas sticking around and keeping this game a lot closer than people expect. Dallas always seems to show up for the big contests and when people think they’re going to get blown out is usually when they step up and show they can contend with anybody even if they don’t win the game outright. Dez Bryant and Demarco Murray are playmakers and I expect they’ll be out in full force in this one which should keep Manning off the field and limit the damage done by the Broncos offense. I am not suggesting taking the Cowboys to cover, win, or for your pool but I would err on the side of caution and keep the Broncos in your back pocket.

Pool Makers:

San Francisco 49ers vs Houston Texans

San Francisco hosts the Houston Texans on Sunday in a battle of two of the more disappointing teams in the league as many had these two pegged as possible Super Bowl contenders. The Niners had a tough two game slide where they dropped games to the Seahawks and Colts but bounced back nicely against the Rams last week and it looks as though they’re back on track. San Fran was awful in their last game at Candlestick so I exoect they’ll want to make a statement in this game and I think they’ll do so behind a solid effort from Colin Kaepernick and their defense. The Texans have shown signs of life but quarterback Matt Schaub is really struggling at the moment and against a stellar defense like San Fran’s I think he gets exposed once again and starts a quarterback controversy in Houston as TJ Yates is waiting in the wings. If you’re in a pinch this is a game I really like and while San Fran could be used in better situations I think they get an easy win here.

Good luck in your pools. See you next week.
