The Minnesota Vikings and the Carolina Panthers face off on Sunday in Minnesota is a week 6 NFL battle of disappointing teams.
The Minnesota Vikings made the playoffs last season but this season they didn’t earn a win until week 4. The Vikings are coming off of a bye week but offensively they are averaging 28.8 points and 350.5 yards per game with a plus 2 turnover ratio. Christian Ponder missed last game and he us questionable for this one but he has completed 59 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and five interceptions while rushing for 76 yards and to touchdowns and Matt Cassel has completed 64 percent of his passes with two touchdowns and an interception leading the Vikings to their only win thus far. Adrian Peterson is averaging 4.6 yards per carry with five touchdowns and he has 11 receptions and a receiving touchdown. The Carolina Panthers had high hopes that this would be the year they were going to take a step forward and compete in the NFC South but thus far they have struggled badly. The Panthers offense is averaging just 18.5 points per game and 329 yards as they are dead even in turnovers. Cam Newton has completed 57.5 percent of his passes with six touchdowns and five interceptions while being sacked 15 times and he has rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. DeAngelo Williams is averaging 4.5 yards per carry but he has yet to find the endzone and Mike Tolbert is averaging 3.7 yards per carry with a touchdown. Greg Olsen leads the Carolina receivers with 21 catches and a touchdown and Steve Smith has 18 catches and a touchdown. Defensively Carolina is allowing just 14.5 points and 301.5 yards per game both ranking them third in the NFL with six interceptions, 12 sacks, and three fumble recoveries. Luke Keuchly has 38 tackles, Thomas Davis has 29 tackles, and Captain Munnerlyn and Greg Hardy have 18 tackles each. Carolina has made mistakes that have beaten themselves.
Minnesota is 4-1 against the spread in their last five home games, 7-15 against the spread following a win, and 1-3-1 against the spread following a bye week. Carolina is 8-3 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread, 5-2 against the spread following a loss, and 4-1 against the spread against a team with a losing record. The home team has covered the point spread four of the last five times these two have met.
This one should be about the ground game and the defense and I look for it to come in under the total. I also have a strong play on who will cover the spread and I will post that pick in the Premium Area.
