NFL Updates: Brady vs. Dolphins, Hillman's demotion and more
October 26, 2013
It sure has been a busy stretch of days since the NFL’s Week 7 slate concluded. The workweek has been jammed full of injury concerns and performance drama from teams all across the league. Tomorrow marks the continuation of Week 8, and there’s no shortage of headlines as we get closer to kickoff time. Let’s take a closer look at the notable players and situations out there. Here’s the latest.
Jets-Bengals Injuries: One of the more intriguing matchups on the schedule tomorrow has the Jets (4-3) traveling to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals (5-2). Both teams have been playing pretty well this season, and the game could come down to a missing player on either side. Neither squad has escaped the injury bug this week, as there are some key names out and/or ailing here.
For the Jets, they’ll be without No. 1 WR Santonio Holmes once again, as he’s still fighting a hamstring issue. WR Greg Salas is questionable, as is one of the most important players on the field--C Nick Mangold. (For the record, coach Rex Ryan says Mangold will play.) There are no less than 13 other names on the report, but all are probable.
For the Bengals, They’ll be without CB Leon Hall and DT Devon Still, which is a big blow to the defense. RB Rex Burkhead is questionable, while Wallace Gilberry, Marvin Jones, Rey Maualuga and Terence Newman are all probable.

Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots: Let’s stick in the AFC East for a moment and check in on Brady. He’s been limited in practice this week with a shoulder injury, but by all indications he should be just fine for the Dolphins. That’ll be a big game for him; with the Patriots coming off a big loss against the Jets, they’re going to need to post a decisive victory to retain their dominance in the division.
Brady also need a big game to reclaim his position as one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. He has just one touchdown pass in the last three games, and has finished below a 50 percent completion rate three times this season. It’s very un-Brady-esque. The Dolphins could be the cure for what ails him, though, as he has 12 touchdowns over the last five games against Miami.
Ronnie Hillman, RB, Denver Broncos: According to reports out of Denver, Hillman has received a demotion. He apparently won’t be suiting up for tomorrow’s game against the Redskins, and the thinking is that it’s because of his ball security problems. Hillman has a fumble in each of the past two weeks, the most recent coming in a key situation against the Colts.
He’ll be replaced on the depth chart by C.J. Anderson, a rookie RB who hasn’t gotten any playing time thus far. This will be an interesting storyline in Denver as the year progresses. If Anderson proves effective (and can hold onto the ball), Hillman may never even get the opportunity to earn his spot back.
NFL Week 8 Schedule: We’ve got just one more day to wait before the bulk of the Week 8 games get going around the NFL. It’s sure to be an interesting slate, as there are plenty of storylines to go around--even in this relatively quiet week. Here’s a look at the full schedule, as well as the times and TV networks carrying the games.
