The Minnesota Vikings and the Washington Redskins face off on Thursday Night in Minnesota in a NFL matchup of playoff teams from last season.
It has been an awful year for the Minnesota Vikings after going to the playoffs last season they look to be drafting at least in the top 10 in this year’s NFL draft. The Vikings offense is averaging 23.2 points and 316.8 yards per game and they have a minus three turnover ratio. The Vikings have tried three QB’s so far this season and for the past two weeks it has been Christian Ponder but it could be Josh Freeman this week. Adrian Peterson is still one of the best of not the best running back in football rushing for 711 yards and seven touchdowns and catching 2 passes out of the backfield. Greg Jennings has 31 catches and two touchdowns, Kyle Rudolph has 30 receptions and three touchdowns, and Jerome Simpson has 29 catches while Cordarrelle Patterson has injected life into the return game. Defensively Minnesota is allowing 31.5 points and 395.1 yards per game and they are 29th against the pass in the NFL while they have eight interceptions, 17 sacks, and six fumble recoveries. Erin Henderson has 73 tackles, Chad Greenway has 64 tackles, and Jared Allen has 4.5 sacks. The Vikings let another one slip away last week allowing the Dallas Cowboys to come from behind late and grab the win.

The Washington Redskins were NFC Champions a year ago and while they aren’t out of it they have dug themselves a hole. The Redskins offense is averaging 25.4 points and 407.6 yards per game and they are minus one in turnover ratio. Robert Griffin III as completed 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,169 yards and nine touchdowns with nine interceptions and he has rushed for 257 yards. Alfred Morris has rushed for 686 yards and five touchdowns but Roy Helu and Darrell Young have seven touchdowns between them. Pierre Garcon has 54 reception to lead the Skins, Jordan Reed has 38 catches, and Leonard Hankerson has 24 catches and three touchdowns. Defensively the Redskins allow a 31st ranked 31.6 points and a 30th ranked 398.8 yards per game with nine interceptions, 26 sacks, and six fumble recoveries. Perry Riley has 68 tackles, London Fletcher has 65 tackles, and Ryan Kerrigan has 6.5 sacks. The Redskins defense has had issues this year but they came up big last week stopping the Chargers three times from the one-half yard line to force overtime.
Minnesota is 2-5 against the spread against a team with a losing record, 2-5 against the spread against the NFC, and 0-4 against the spread following a game that they covered the point spread. Washington is 1-5 against the spread against the NFC, 0-4 against the spread following a win, and 0-4 against the spread following a cover. The underdog has covered the point spread in five of the last six meetings of these two.
I am not expecting much form either defense here and while the total looks to be a big number I still have it going over and that is my free pick. My stronger play is on the winning side and I will post that pick Thursday in the Premium Area as well as on the Sports Chat Place App.
