The San Francisco 49ers and the Carolina Panthers face off on Sunday in San Francisco in a matchup of two of the more physical teams in the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers are coming off of a bye week but after a slow start to the season they seemed to have found their gear and are once again looking like Super Bowl contenders. The 49ers offense is averaging 27.2 points and 342. Yards per game and they have a plus four turnover ratio. Colin Kaepernick has completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 1,584 yards with nine touchdowns and five interceptions and he has rushed for 294 yards and three touchdowns. Frank Gore has rushed for 618 yards and seven touchdowns and Kendall Hunter has been effective in relief. Anquan Boldin has been a difference maker catching 38 passes with two touchdowns and Vernon Davis has 29 catches and seven touchdowns. Defensively San Francisco allows 18.1 points and 325.1 yards per game with nine interceptions, 17 sacks, and seven fumble recoveries. NaVorro Bowman has 69 tackles, Patrick Willis has 42 tackles, and Aldon Smith returns to the lineup this week as well. The 49ers are looking as tough as they have in recent years.
The Carolina Panthers have won four games in a row and after suffering some tough losses in winnable games early they are in second place in the NFC South. The Panthers offense is averaging 25.5 points and 332.8 yards per game with a plus eight turnover ratio. Cam Newton has completed 64.4 percent of his passes for 1,801 yards with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions and he has rushed for 251 yards and four touchdowns. DeAngelo Williams has rushed for 519 yards and a touchdown and Mike Tolbert has rushed for four touchdowns and has 13 catches and two receiving touchdowns. Steve Smith has 36 catches and three touchdowns, Greg Olsen has 34 catches and three touchdowns, and Brandon LaFell has 27 catches and three touchdowns. Defensively the Panther allow 13.2 points per game which is second best in the NFL and 299.9 yards per game which is third best in the NFL with 12 interceptions, 23 sacks, and eight fumble recoveries. Luke Keuchly has 64 tackles and three interceptions, Thomas Davis has 61 tackles, and Charles Johnson has 7.0 sacks. The Panthers have a style of play that will keep them in the game with any team in football.
San Francisco is 4-0 against the spread following a win, 5-1 against the spread against the NFC, and 18-7-1 against the spread in their last 26 home games. Carolina is 4-0 against the spread in their last four games, 6-2 against the spread following a win, and 8-3 against the spread in their last 11 road games. The home team has covered the spread in five of the last seven meetings of these two.
This one should be a bruiser and if you love defense and hard hitting like I do then as a fan this is your game. As far as the spread goes games like this tend to be close and points come at a premium so anything better than five is usually golden so I am going to take the points here.
