The Washington Redskins travel down to Atlanta to play the Falcons on Sunday.
The Redskins dropped to 3-10 on the year after losing to Kansas City 45-10 last weekend. Washington was a team with nothing to play for, and they looked like it. The Redskins played awful on offense, defense and special teams. Robert Griffin III played terrible, defenders forgot how to tackle, and the coaches looked uninterested on the sideline. Washington gained only 257 yards on offense and converted 3 of 15 third down conversions. Griffin completed 12 of 26 passes for 164 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. RB Alfred Morris carried the ball 12 times for 31 yards, while WR Robinson caught 4 balls for 67 yards. The Redskins defense allowed 347 yards, forced one turnover, and did a good job getting off the field on third down. Washington’s special teams allowed a stunning 321 return yards and 2 touchdowns on Sunday. This was the Redskins' fifth double digit loss of the season and things could not get worse in Washington right now. Coach Shanahan is debating sitting Griffin for the remainder of the year, which I agree with as a Redskins fan for the past 30 years. As for Shanahan and his son, Kyle, they may be coaching their final three games in Washington as the relationship with the owner, Daniel Snyder, and the locker room seems to have hit rock bottom. It will be interesting to see if the Redskins show some pride and play hard in Atlanta this weekend.

The Atlanta Falcons also dropped to 3-10 on the year after losing to Green Bay 22-21 on Sunday. The Falcons gained 285 total yards against the Packers and turned the ball over twice in the bone-chilling weather of Lambeau Field. The Falcons, who play home games at the Georgia Dome, didn’t think the weather was as much of a factor as the missed opportunities. QB Matt Ryan completed 20 of 35 passes for 206 yards with 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. RB Stephen Jackson rushed for 71 yards, while WR Roddy White caught an impressive 8 balls for 74 yards. The Atlanta defense allowed 334 total yards with 222 coming thru the air. The Falcons did force two turnovers and sacked Matt Flynn 5 times in the loss. The Falcons had lost five straight games before beating Buffalo last week. It’s been a disappointing year for the Falcons and they have been plagued by injuries, including the loss of star WR Julio Jones earlier in the year. Atlanta has played better at home except for their games against the elite teams in the league, so they should be looking forward to facing the Redskins this weekend.
This is a battle of two teams that do not have much to play for at this point in the season. Atlanta has won the last three meetings against the Redskins, including a 7-point win at Washington last year. The Redskins are an absolute mess right now and there is no way I can back them against anyone. I don’t think the locker room cares and the relationship with their head coach is in question. Griffin will not play as QB Cousins will get the start for the Redskins. Meanwhile, Atlanta has next year to look forward to as their key players will be healthy. The Falcons will look to gain some momentum heading into the offseason, starting this weekend against the Redskins. Atlanta wins and covers at home.
