The Line: Detroit Lions -9 -- Over/Under: 49 See the Latest Odds
The New York Giants travel to Detroit to play the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
The Giants dropped to 5-9 on the year after losing at home to Seattle 23-0 last weekend. New York only gained 181 total yards against the stingy Seahawks defense. The Giants only gained 25 rushing yards, as RB Brown rushed 11 times for only 17 yards. Eli Manning completed 18 of 31 passes for 156 yards and threw 5 interceptions. Manning was sacked 3 times and the Giants only converted 1 of 10 3rd down conversions. The defense allowed 327 total yards to Seattle and forced 1 turnover in the loss. On the year, Manning has thrown for 3,410 yards and 16 touchdowns, while Cruz has caught 73 balls for 998 yards and 4 touchdowns. New York ranks in the middle of the pack in most statistical categories this season. The biggest problem for the Giants has been their rushing game which ranks 28th in the league, averaging just 83.5 rushing yards per game this year. The Giants lost their first 6 games of the season before winning their next four games. Since then, the Giants have lost three of four and their season is essentially over now. This will be New York’s final road game of the season; the Giants are 2-5 on the road this season.

The Detroit Lions dropped to 7-7 on the year after losing to Baltimore 18-16 on Monday night at home. The Lions gained 349 total yards against the Ravens, but they turned the ball over three times. QB Mathew Stafford completed 18 of 34 passes for 235 yards with 1 touchdown and 3 interceptions. RB Reggie Bush carried the ball 18 times for 86 yards and 1 touchdown. WR Calvin Johnson caught 6 balls for 98 yards in the loss. Detroit’s defense allowed 305 total yards and did a great job by not allowing any touchdowns in the game. However, the Lions had no answer for Baltimore’s K Justin Tucker, who kicked 6 field goals in the game. On the year, Stafford has thrown for 4,211 yards and 28 touchdowns. Bush has rushed for 940 yards and 4 scores, while Johnson has caught 81 balls for 1,449 yards and 12 touchdowns. Detroit ranks 3rd in the league in passing yards, averaging 292.4 yards per game. The Lions defense ranks 4th in opposing rushing yards, allowing only 98.6 yards per game this season. The Lions have been up and down all year and they will have to win their next two games to have any chance at making the playoffs. This will be Detroit’s final home game of the season; the Lions are 4-3 at home this year.
The Giants can’t wait until the season ends so they can move on from what has turned into a disaster of a season. Manning will bounce back from a terrible performance against a tough Seattle team. Manning loves throwing in a dome and if the offensive line gives him time he should have a good day against an average Lion’s secondary. On the other side of the ball, Stafford and Johnson should have success against a below average Giants secondary and overall defense. I think both teams score in the high 20’s to low 30’s and the over is a great play.
