NFL Updates: Super Bowl Notes, Vick, Off-Season Key Dates and More
February 3, 2014
Now that the Super Bowl is all finished up, the NFL off-season activities can begin. Even though we’re technically as far away from football as we can get right now, there are still plenty of noteworthy happenings coming our way in the next few months and the news just keeps on coming. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at some of the happenings out there. Here’s the latest.
Super Bowl Notes: From the botched-snap safety to the blowout final score, Denver just couldn’t do anything right against the Seahawks, and it ended up as an ugly, embarrassing and completely unexpected 43-8 loss.
Those fans hoping for a competitive game (not to mention Broncos fans) were disappointed, as Seattle utterly dominated every single facet of the Super Bowl, from rush yardage (135-27) to turnovers (0-4) to special teams/defensive TDs (2-0).
This year’s Seahawks defense will go down as one of the greatest ever, and thanks to that performance they’ve got some legitimate considerations for the top spot all-time. On the other side, it was a sad day for Peyton Manning, who is now 11-12 in the playoffs and 1-2 in Super Bowl appearances.

Michael Vick, QB, Philadelphia Eagles: The soon-to-be 34-year-old (June) Michael Vick will be entering the new league year as a free agent, and he’s already got at least a couple of reported suitors. The New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers both apparently hold some level of interest in the 12-year veteran, who has expressed a desire to get a starting job back in 2014.
The apparent interest makes sense for both the Jets and the Bucs. New York suffered through a sketchy season of Geno Smith, and Tampa still isn’t sure what they have in Mike Glennon. Both teams have salary cap room to spare and would benefit from a veteran presence at the QB position.
Though nothing is set in stone just yet, we’ll give the inside track to the Jets, whose offensive coordinator (Marty Mornhinweg) has worked with Vick before in Philadelphia.
Kirk Cousins, QB, Washington Redskins: Another QB who could be on the move this off-season is Cousins, who has been the subject of trade rumors pretty much since the day RG3 established himself as one of the premiere young signal-callers in the league. Despite some sketchy numbers in 2013 (five games; 854 yards; four touchdowns; seven interceptions), he’s expected to draw quite a bit of interest in the off-season trade market.
For the record, Cousins believes he’s good enough to be starting somewhere (as well he should believe) and could draw a decent price to a QB-hungry team. Cleveland has been mentioned as a possible landing spot, but will have to figure out what to do with the newly-healthy Brian Hoyer before the season begins.
Julian Edelman, WR, New England Patriots: We’ll finish things up in New England today by taking a look at Edelman. He’s set to become a free agent this off-season and word is that he’s unlikely to stay with the Pats due to their reluctance to pay him an inflated salary.
One reported landing spot for Edelman could be Houston, who already have a couple of nice WRs to their credit in Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins. A few extra tweaks on offense could lead to a nice season in 2014, and Edelman could be a big part of those plans.
