NFL Updates: Britt, Hoyer, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 1, 2014
The workweek marches on, and so does the NFL off-season. Even though there aren’t any games to look forward to each weekend, there’s still plenty of news out there trickling in on a daily basis. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and see what some of the big-name players are up to right now. Here’s the latest.
Kenny Britt, WR, St. Louis Rams: Here’s an interesting signing that occurred yesterday. The Rams and free agent Kenny Britt agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth $1.4 million ($500,000 guaranteed).
Britt is coming off a rough season, with just 11 catches for 96 yards and no scores, but most people think he’s still got a little something left in the tank. We’ll see how he functions in the Rams’ offense.
Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers: It remains to be seen exactly how new head coach Lovie Smith will utilize his talented RB Doug Martin, but by most indications he’ll get a lot of work. Smith called Martin the team’s “bell cow,” but said he likes the RB rotation the Bucs have in Bobby Rainey and Mike James as well.
It sounds like we’ll be seeing a lot of Martin in 2014, which should be taken as good news to Tampa Bay fans. He’s coming off a down-year during which his numbers were hampered by a shoulder injury, but will be coming into the season fully healthy. He posted 127 rush attempts for 456 yards and a touchdown in six games.
Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers: Another backfield dynamic that will be interesting to watch in 2014 will be Pittsburgh’s. Even though the Steelers picked up ex-Patriot LeGarrette Blount, they’ll still consider second-year man Le’Veon Bell to be their feature back.
Having that extra depth behind Bell will be very much welcomed in Pittsburgh, as the team lacked consistency in their backfield during 2013. Blount logged 153 rush attempts for 772 yards and seven touchdowns with New England last year, while Bell put up 244 attempts for 860 yards and eight scores in Pittsburgh.
Brian Hoyer, QB, Cleveland Browns: We’ve got a bit of an update on Hoyer this morning, and the news appears to be pretty good. Earlier this week he reported he was “on track” to participate--at least in part--during organized team activities for the Browns, which begin on April 7.
Hoyer posted some promising numbers in 2013 before going down with an ACL injury and subsequent surgery. He still needs to meet with doctors and gain clearance before he can return to action, but it looks like he’s remaining on track for a comeback.
