NFL Updates: Manning, Kaepernick, Off-Season Schedule and More
April 11, 2014
As we cruise into the weekend, the first organized activity of the new NFL year (for some teams, anyway) will whet our appetites for what’s to come. There’s plenty to talk about as we head toward the draft and eventually the 2014 season, so with that in mind let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there. Here’s the latest.
Cardinals Offense Additions: Arizona OC Harold Goodwin recently made some comments about the team’s offensive situation, and he sounded pretty positive over the direction the team was heading as they close in on the 2014 campaign. New WR Ted Ginn will be an all-around help for the offense, as he should attract defenders and free up space for Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd.
Goodwin also expressed optimism over the offensive line, saying that new guy Jared Veldheer and returning guard Jonathan Cooper should make a potent combo. If he’s right, we should be seeing the Arizona offense take a step forward this season and do some major damage in a very strong and competitive division.

Adrian Peterson, RB, Minnesota Vikings: It’s been a while since we’ve checked in with Peterson, so let’s see how he’s doing. According to the man himself, he says he’s close to 100 percent following the surgery on his groin this off-season (late January). As of right now, he’s still in the rehab phase, but does expect to be able to join the team’s workout program in the near future.
By the time the summer rolls around (and thus, training camp), Peterson expects to be back to normal and the groin shouldn’t be an issue at all by then. He’s coming off a 1266-yard season on 279 attempts in 2013.
Eli Manning, QB, New York Giants: Manning went under the knife yesterday, and by all accounts everything went smoothly. What he had done was a debridement of the ankle--more or less a cleaning procedure following his high-ankle sprain suffered in late December.
The recovery timeline for Manning dictates that he should be running in about six weeks or so. In the meantime, he’ll be taking part in the team’s off-season program (the meetings, anyway) so he can get a jump on the new offense. He’s coming off a 3,818-yard season with 18 touchdowns and 27 interceptions, so he’s got lots of room for improvement.
Colin Kaepernick, QB, San Francisco 49ers: The big news from yesterday was the announcement that Kaepernick was one of the three people named in a “suspicious incident” which occurred on April 1 in South Florida.
The incident involves a woman, who claims she visited Kaepernick, then woke up in a hospital bed with no recollection of how she got there. Ricardo Lockette and Quinton Patton are also named in the report.
Kaepernick isn’t being investigated at this time, but as new information develops that may change. We’ll keep you posted.
