As I sit here in a sweatshirt…in May…I can’t help but think about the fact that we’re less than a week from the draft and it still feels like football season (at least ‘round these parts). To commemorate this never ending winter, we’re going to take a gander at the ten coldest games the NFL has ever seen. If this weather keeps up, don’t be surprised if a few of these are replaced after the 2014 season (I sure hope not…)

Top Ten Coldest NFL Games

USA TODAY Sports

1. The coldest game in NFL history was December 31, 1967’s “Ice Bowl” at Lambeau Field. Shocking, I know, that the Packers would ever play in inclement weather. The Pack took on the Dallas Cowboys during this particular game, ultimately winning 21-17.

2. On January 10, 1982, the San Diego Chargers traveled to take-on the Cincinnati Bengals at Riverfront Stadium. The mercury read -9 and the wind chill is estimated to have been nearly -50. Nati protected their home turf, winning big with a 27-7 victory.

3. The Colts and Chiefs are prone to meeting one another in the play-offs and 1996 was no different. On January 7 of that year, the clubs did battle at Arrowhead Stadium on a -6 degree day. The game proved to be a defensive showcase, with Indy pulling out a narrow 10-7 win.

4. January 4, 1981 marked a -5 degree game between the Cleveland Browns and the Oakland Raiders at Cleveland Municipal Stadium. The Browns, as one might expect, lost an amazingly close game 14-12.

5. We return to Lambeau Field (and will again later…surprise, surprise!) for the 5th coldest game in league history. You probably remember this one, which took place on January 20, 2008. The temperature was -4, but felt like -24, when the New York Giants beat the Pack by a field goal to advance to the Super Bowl.

6. During a December 3, 1972 NFC North battle, the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears met at Metropolitan Stadium to play on a -2 degree day that felt like -26. Bundled-up Vikes fans got to see their squad prevail in a 23-10 victory.

7.  As you’ll see when you reach No. 9, the Los Angeles Raiders did not have the easiest time of it playing on the road in chilly weather. On December 26, 1993, they were blown out 28-0 by the Green Bay Packers during a 0 degree game at Lambeau Field.

8. In another Metropolitan Stadium match-up, this time on December 10, 1972  (gotta say I’m glad I wasn’t alive that winter…sounds unpleasant), the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers played in 0 degree weather that felt like -18. The Pack eventually beat their longtime foes 23-7.

9. January 15, 1994 saw the NFL’s 9th coldest game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo, New York. The Bills hosted the (then) Los Angeles Raiders. The temperature was literally 0, but felt like a shocking -32 with wind chill. The Bills prevailed over the SoCal team by 6 points.

10. On January 4, 2014, the San Francisco 49ers visited the Green Bay Packers at a frigid Lambeau Field. At kick-off, the mercury read 5 degrees Fahrenheit with a wind chill of -13. Interestingly, the California boys beat the hardy Packers, advancing in last year’s play-offs before ultimately losing the NFC title to the Seattle Seahawks (who we all know went on to soundly demolish the Denver Broncos).
