NFL Updates: Draft Speculation, Off-Season Schedule and More

TV:

Just two more days until the 2014 NFL Draft, and it can’t come soon enough. We’ve heard endless amounts of speculation for a period of months now, but all that is about to come to a head on Thursday. In the meantime, let’s do some more speculating by taking our daily look around the league at some of the headlines out there. Here’s the latest.

Brian Cushing, LB, Houston Texans: Way back in Week 7 of the 2013 season, the Texans were dealt a crushing blow with the loss of Cushing. He suffered a torn knee ligament and broken fibula then, and it’s been a long road back to health for him this off-season.
Cushing was reported yesterday as saying that he wasn’t certain what type of involvement he’d be having in the team’s OTAs (which start May 27), but that he’s on track to being ready for the season.
With a new coaching staff in place, the Texans will be trying to regain a foothold in the AFC South. Their once-stellar defense was pretty putrid last season, so they’ve got some work to do. Getting Cushing back healthy is a good start.

Browns’ First-Round Bounty: Say what you will about Cleveland; They’re sitting pretty when it comes to early picks this year. They own two first-round picks in Thursday’s draft, and may end up with a third within the next couple of days.
Reports have been swirling about the Browns’ desire to move up into the bottom end of the first round (by presumably trading away their No. 35 overall pick) and sneak ahead of the Houston Texans at No. 33. Cleveland picks at Nos. 4 and 26 overall, and a potential move might open the door for a late-first-round QB selection (and the Browns definitely need a quarterback).
The Seahawks pick at No. 32, and have been mentioned as possible trading partners with Cleveland. That opens up a lot of new angles for bringing in young talent to the Browns. Stay tuned on this one.

Johnny Football Latest: Since we’re on the subject of potential QB draft targets, we might as well check out the latest on Johnny Manziel. Some mocks now have him falling out of the first round completely, and that’s not the end of the apparent disinterest.
The Raiders, who pick at No. 5 overall, are reportedly not considering Manziel (or Blake Bortles, for that matter) as a target. They’re apparently looking at wide receivers for their new QB Matt Schaub.
The Cowboys will be on the clock at No. 16, and they’re hoping Manziel drops to them--but not as a draft target. They’d reportedly want the trade leverage he’d bring to a potential trade partner looking to move up and snag him.
Our take? Manziel may drop out of the top 5, but won’t survive past the Buccaneers at No. 7 or the Vikings at No. 8.

Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
