NFL Updates: Roethlisberger, Dolphins, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 8, 2014
It’s finally here. The first round of the 2014 NFL Draft will be this evening, which means we can finally bring to an end all that endless speculation and head-scratching. While we’re getting settled in and seeing who our favorite teams are going to pick, let’s take a closer look at some of the headlines in our daily glance around the league.
Shazier to Dolphins?: Let’s start things out today with some more draft speculation by taking our talents to South Beach and checking on the Dolphins. The team met with Ohio State LB Ryan Shazier for around an hour and a half yesterday, which would indicate a strong interest in spending their first-round pick on him.
Shazier will certainly be going in the first round of tonight’s draft, but it’s uncertain how high he’ll go. Some mocks have him going to the Dolphins at 19 (and there seems to be some significant interest there) and others have him falling to Green Bay at 21, Cincinnati at 24 or even Denver at 31.
Given the strong Florida ties (Shazier is a native of the Ft. Lauderdale area), we’d say this ups the Dolphins’ odds of picking him. That said, they could also use an OT there, so we may see them bypass Shazier for the likes of Zach Martin or Cyrus Kouandjio.

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, Pittsburgh Steelers: This should be music to Steelers fans’ ears. Yesterday, Roethlisberger was reported as saying that he feels he can play “five, six, seven more years” in the NFL, adding that he felt like he was in great shape.
Big Ben has been one of the most durable quarterbacks we’ve seen in recent years. Despite the amount of hits he takes (usually while trying to extend plays), he’s managed to remain healthy. He played every snap in 2013 behind a patchwork offensive line.
Now it’s up to the Steelers to get him some help in the draft. They’ll likely be targeting DL, LB and OT early on.
Top 10 Mock Draft: Since today’s draft day, we’re going to take one more shot at a top 10 for tonight’s first round. Anything can and will happen when teams are on the clock, however, so there’s really no telling how the final order will go down. That said, here’s our best guess.
1. Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina
2. St. Louis Rams: Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo
4. Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, QB, Texas A&M
5. Oakland Raiders: Sammy Watkins, WR, Clemson
6. Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M
7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Evans, WR, Texas A&M
8. Minnesota Vikings: Blake Bortles, QB, Central Florida
9. Buffalo Bills: Eric Ebron, TE, North Carolina
10. Detroit Lions: Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State
