TV:

We’re cruising toward another NFL off-season weekend, and the news continues to trickle in from around the league. Even though Week 1 is still pretty far away, there’s still plenty to talk about. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the happenings out there. Here’s the latest.

Andre Johnson, WR, Houston Texans: Let’s start things out today by taking on one of the hot-button topics that has dominated NFL news this week. Johnson caused a firestorm of media coverage when he questioned whether or not Houston was still the place for him. That sentiment brought a flood of speculation on what the Texans should do with the indifferent/disgruntled WR, and opinions vary on the matter.
Trying to trade Johnson has been a popular suggestion, but that’s easier said than done. He’s got a cap charge this year of $15.5 million, but would cost $12 million if he were dealt before June 1. After that date, a trade spreads the cash over a two-year period, which is something the Texans might want to pursue in order to save salary room.
Of course, Johnson could elect to rework his deal in exchange for moving to a contender, so the dates are just speculation at this point. So far, the team’s been mum on the subject, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Joe Haden, CB, Cleveland Browns: We couldn’t let a day pass without talking about Haden (who’s become a favorite topic in this space) and his brand new contract. He became just the latest elite defensive back to sign a fresh (and rich) deal on Tuesday, and the contract is reportedly for five years with $45 million guaranteed and $68 million overall.
Haden is still due just under $6.7 million for 2014, so we can tack that onto the total value of the contract to make it six years and nearly $75 million.
That’s a pretty good chunk of change, but Haden is a pretty good CB--one of the best in the league. He’ll be the centerpiece of what should be a very potent secondary in Cleveland. They’ll need to be good with uber-WR Josh Gordon potentially suspended for the entire year.

Meachem on the Way Out?: Veteran New Orleans WR Robert Meachem’s days with the Saints could be numbered. He’s currently locked in a battle for a roster spot, and there are no guarantees here. In order to make the team, he’s got to snag one of the top four roster spots at his position, and he’s currently behind Marques Colston, Kenny Stills and Brandin Cooks.
Nick Toon and Joe Morgan will also be fighting for that No. 4 spot, but Meachem does have the advantage in that he’s familiar with the offense and excels at blocking. Still, we could see a cut before the regular season arrives if someone overtakes him.

Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
