NFL Updates: Jets QB Drama, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 24, 2014
We’ve reached the long weekend (finally) which gives us an opportunity to kick back and take a look ahead at the upcoming NFL season. There are plenty of headlines out there to talk about, even though we’re still pretty far off from opening day, so with that in mind let’s take a look around the league and check out some of the news out there.
Giovani Bernard, RB, Cincinnati Bengals: Here’s an interesting tidbit out of the Cincinnati backfield. The Bengals will reportedly be making creative use of Bernard out of the backfield, including making other teams “guess where he’s at” according to RB coach Kyle Caskey.
Caskey went on to compare Bernard to the Lions’ Reggie Bush as far as his versatility, and made indications that the team will be lining him up all over the field in an effort to take advantage of his receiving skills.
Bernard posted 56 catches last season, and it’s a safe bet he’ll at least equal that this year.

Jets Potential Starting QB: A hot point of contention among AFC East aficionados this off-season has been the question of who will be starting at QB for the Jets during this upcoming campaign. The team made waves when they signed former eagle Michael Vick in free agency, and still has second-year man Geno Smith--who is fresh off a turbulent 2013--as a potential starter as well.
In all honesty, it’s probably a toss-up between the two, but with all the off-season additions the team has made on offense (Eric Decker, Chris Johnson, Jace Amaro), Vick just makes more sense for a team that has to win now in order to save head coach Rex Ryan’s job.
New York will come back with a strong defense again in 2014--they always do--and a big step forward on offense could potentially put them in a dogfight with the Patriots for supremacy in the division. It’ll be interesting to watch, that’s for sure.
Ryan Mallett, QB, New England Patriots: Speaking of the Patriots, let’s visit them and see what’s happening with all those rumors about Mallett. He’d been the frequent subject of trade scenarios right around draft time, and those sentiments have persisted since then.
Head coach Bill Belichick dampened those rumors late this week, however, insisting that the team isn’t interested in dealing him.
If Belichick is indeed correct, that means Mallett will finish up his contract (this is the final year) as Tom Brady’s backup once again. We haven’t gotten to see much of Mallett over the past few years, but that hasn’t stopped the interest from other teams potentially searching for a new QB.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
