NFL Updates: Flowers' Next Move, Fantasy, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 15, 2014
We’ve officially reached the beginning of a new week, which will bring along with it even more NFL news and headlines. As we cruise toward the beginning of the 2014 campaign, we’re hearing more and more about what the new season is going to resemble. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the current happenings.
Flowers’ Potential Future: On Friday, we got the news most of us have been expecting for a little while. The Chiefs released their former Pro-Bowl cover man Brandon Flowers after six years with the team.
The reasons for Flowers’ release seem to be mostly financial: He would have been due $5.25 million in salary with a $2 million training camp bonus on the horizon. The Chiefs were trying to shop him before the draft, but found no takers.
Flowers is also coming off a down-year, never quite fitting in with the new scheme in KC. That said, he’ll be getting plenty of offers. Flowers can be a very capable player if he falls in with the right team, and there will be plenty of suitors for him to choose from.

Around the League: Let’s check out a few nuggets from around the NFL as we head into the new week.
The Bills’ C.J. Spiller isn’t expected to be getting a new contract until after this season. Both he and the team seem to be content with seeing where things go in 2014, but the early indication seems to be that he’ll have a productive campaign if he stays healthy.
Still no word on Andre Johnson from the Texans. He’s missed out on off-season practices and may end up absent from minicamp this week as well. He’s reportedly frustrated with where Houston is headed.
Ndamukong Suh probably won’t be going anywhere. Sources close to the team believe he’ll stay in Detroit despite the impasse in the current contract negotiations. Suh’s cap number is north of $22 million.
Fantasy Corner: All last week, we visited the top fantasy football picks on a position-by-position basis. We’re doing sleepers this week, and today it’s time for the running back spot. RB is a tough call as always, but here’s a quick rundown of some lesser-known options down there a little lower.
After the initial top 10 or so (which you absolutely must make a point to get one or two in the first couple of rounds) is when the drop-off happens and the question marks begin. Andre Ellington looks pretty good in the 15-17 range, as does Reggie Bush a little further down. Shane Vereen and Ryan Mathews should both go around 20, and both seem to be decent pickups for that level.
Sticking out a little further down the list, we have Ray Rice, Frank Gore and Chris Johnson, who could put up some nice numbers in his new Big Apple address. Maurice Jones-Drew in Oakland makes sense around the No. 30 spot as well.
Regardless of where you’re picking, there will be plenty of risk involved in the RB slot this year, as usual.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
