NFL Updates: A Pair of Holmes, Fantasy, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 16, 2014
Now that the workweek is back (yuck), it’s time to get back to the usual grind. That said, we’ll be getting all sorts of new NFL news coming each day, as there are minicamps scheduled around the league. Let’s start things off on the right foot by checking out some of the notable happenings out there right now.
Santonio Holmes, WR, Free Agent: It’s been a while since we’ve checked in on Holmes, so let’s see where he’s at right now when it comes to finding a team.
His trainer made some public comments this weekend about the maligned WR’s potential future, saying that Holmes will definitely be on a team and is going to get picked up as long as he can convince potential suitors that he won’t be a detriment in the locker room.
Holmes peaked in 2009 with 1,248 yards but stuttered in his time with the Jets, logging just 23 catches last year and making headlines more for his off-the-field demeanor than his injury-limited play. We’re sure he’ll find a home somewhere, but his best days are obviously behind him.

Andre Holmes, WR, Oakland Raiders: Now let’s move on to another Holmes, this one the Andre down in Oakland. Remember his name; You’ll be hearing it quite a bit this season. He’s on track to secure the Raiders’ No. 3 WR position, overtaking Denarius Moore in the process.
Holmes has been impressing the coaching staff with his play, and he’s heading in the right direction. Over the last seven games of last year, he posted 431 yards and a score. Alongside James Jones and Rod Streater, Holmes could round out a very potent 1-2-3 combination at WR that would prove invaluable to the Raiders QB (whoever that turns out to be).
Fantasy Corner: This week, we’ve been looking at some of the potential sleepers on a position-by-position basis when it comes to fantasy football. Today it’s time for wide receivers, which is an all-important slot on your roster.
Outside the top 10, we’ve got a few guys giving early indications of increased value. Keenan Allen seems to be a favorite, and he’s going at a reasonable 16 or so. Cordarrelle Patterson and Wes Welker can be found in that range as well.
Further down, We think Roddy White will have a bounce-back year--he’s around 20--and Golden Tate, Emmanuel Sanders and Mike Wallace should be pretty productive as well.
Further down, the names Eric Decker, Sammy Watkins, Tavon Austin, Anquan Boldin and Dwayne Bowe stick out to us. There’s talent at all levels; Whether or not it pays off is another matter entirely.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
