NFL Updates: News from Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
June 20, 2014
We’ve reached the end of the workweek, and it’s been a very busy one for NFL news. With all of the minicamps happening around the league the past few days, we’ve gotten yet another look toward the upcoming 2014-15 season and what it could potentially look like. With that in mind, let’s take our daily look at some of the headlines out there.
Jaguars Notes: Let’s head down to Jacksonville and see what the Jags have been up to this week. Yesterday, we got a new report confirming that new RB Toby Gerhart would enter the season as the team’s No. 1 back and will be receiving the bulk of the carries. The Jaguars would like to model Gerhart’s role after Marshawn Lynch in Seattle, logging backfield catches and tough yardage while pass-protecting as well.
Also, the team is feeling pretty confident in Denard Robinson’s development. He’s expected to help Gerhart out of the backfield and make some pass-catching impact himself. Robinson dealt with a hand injury last season, but is reportedly healthy now. He’ll be one of Jacksonville’s impact players this year.

Yates Trade Breakdown: A day or so ago, word came out that the Texans had traded their backup QB T.J. Yates to the Falcons in exchange for linebacker Akeem Dent. The situation was a bit strange in the way it played out. Houston was originally planning on flat-out releasing Yates, but once word broke that they were planning on cutting ties, the calls started coming in.
Enter Atlanta, who had a glaring need at the No. 2 spot on their QB roster, as none of the signal-callers behind Matt Ryan had much experience at the NFL level. Yates can step in and immediately serve as the team’s backup, which should alleviate some concern from fans.
Now the Texans will head toward the season with Ryan Fitzpatrick serving as their No. 1 QB, and Case Keenum and Tom Savage behind him.
Broncos Notes: Yesterday, we got some fresh perspective on a couple of Broncos players. First off, we’ll visit with new starting RB Montee Ball. He reportedly impressed the team with his performance during minicamp this week, displaying adept hands on passes and improved footwork in protection situations. Ball apparently looks every bit the part of a starting RB.
Things are also going well with new WR Emmanuel Sanders. Fresh off a stint in Pittsburgh, he’s already fitting in well with the Broncos’ offensive scheme. The team is impressed with his versatility and dedication, and there’s a good chance that he can break 1,000 yards this year for the first time in his career.
