NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
July 19, 2014
This week, we began getting our very first taste of the 2014 off-season training camp sessions, and we’ve got lots more to look forward to in the coming days. While we’re waiting, let’s fill our time with our daily look around the league at some of the key players and situations out there. Here’s the latest.
Cowboys Backfield: Late this week, we got a glimpse of how the hierarchy in the Dallas backfield will be working. DeMarco Murray will head into the season as the clear-cut No. 1 guy, obviously, but there are a few interesting things going on beneath him on the depth chart.
Sources close to the team are reporting that Lance Dunbar will begin the season in the No. 2 running back slot, serving as a “specialist” in certain scenarios. As for the No. 3 gig, it’s coming down to Joseph Randle and Ryan Williams. Randle is the current favorite to win the position, and would likely switch to the every-down role in the case of an injury to Murray.

Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee Titans: Much has been made this off-season about how 2014 will be a key year for Titans QB Jake Locker. It’ll be “now or never” for him in this upcoming campaign, as it’ll serve as his last chance to show the Titans organization that he’s the guy.
Locker will be a free agent after this year, as the team declined to pick up his option for the 2015 campaign. If he wants to stay in Tennessee on a fat new contract, he needs to come up big in the important statistical categories--as well as the biggest category of them all, which is winning.
Will Locker be able to succeed? Most think the environment is favorable for doing so, as he’s got a good support system in place. The running game, defense and coaching staff all look much better this season, and Tennessee’s schedule doesn’t look all that tough.
NFL Draft Update: Big news for the 2015 NFL Draft: It’s on the move. The event won’t be held in New York next year for the first time since 1965, and will relocate to either Los Angeles or Chicago in 2015.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league narrowed down the choices from an even dozen cities, and that both L.A. and the Windy City put in very impressive bids in an effort to host the festivities.
As for the move from New York, the proverbial nail in the coffin was likely when Radio City Music Hall informed the league that they wouldn’t be available during the months of April or May. Next year’s draft is expected to take place from April 22-25 or April 29-May 2. We’ll keep you posted on any fresh news.
