NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More

We’ve got just one more day left before the first official NFL preseason game, and the anticipation is running at a fever pitch right now. While we’re waiting on our favorite teams to take the field for the first time during this new season, let’s take our daily look around the league and see which players are making news out there right now.

Marshawn Lynch, RB, Seattle Seahawks: We haven’t visited the ramifications of this situation just yet, so let’s dive into the whole holdout (and consequent resolution) thing with Lynch.
He ended his standoff with the team late this week, returning to the team facilities after a brief one-week holdout. Here’s how the team convinced Lynch to return: They moved around some money in his existing deal, combining roster bonuses and incentives into his pay for this year. All things considered, he’ll be making $6.5 million in 2014, which is a bit of a raise over the $5 million he was originally set to be getting.
All of that said, this is still just a band-aid situation on the larger issue of his dissatisfaction over his contract. Lynch inked a four-year, $30 million deal in 2012. We may see some more wrangling in the future.

2015 NFL Draft Locations: Late this week, we got a bit of insight into the NFL’s plans to move the 2015 NFL Draft out of New York.
Two weeks ago, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell reported that the league would be moving the draft out of the Big Apple for the first time since 1965 (due at least in some part to a scheduling conflict at Radio City Music Hall). The two cities in the running to host the 2015 ceremonies are Chicago and Los Angeles.
According to the latest reports, Los Angeles has the early lead over the Windy City, and we’d tend to agree there. The league has always seemed desperate to drum up interest in L.A., especially since they don’t have a team.
Reported dates for the draft could be April 22-25 or April 29-May 2, but nothing is set in stone just yet.

Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles: Now let’s move on to that finely-tuned offensive machine that is the Philadelphia Eagles. Ertz may be a player to watch this season, as there are many sources close to the team who are pegging him to have a big year statistically.
Even Eagles OC Pat Shurmur got into the action late this week, saying that the whole TE class has shown improvement (a group that also includes Brent Celek and James Casey), though Ertz has made the greatest strides.
All three tight ends will see some more balls come their way due to a revamped receiving corps. We’ll have to wait and see how that translates statistically, though.

Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
