The Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers play a preseason game on Thursday at Qualcomm Stadium.

Offensively, the Cowboys should be just fine with Jason Witten, Tony Romo, Dez Bryant and DeMarco Murray returning as the main core. The Cowboys need to improve their offensive line play and get more production out of their running backs, but this still a solid offensive club that should put up plenty of points. As far as a backup quarterback, the Cowboys are going with Brandon Weeden, who threw for more than 5,000 yards and 23 touchdowns in two seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Expect a solid mixture of the pass and running game to test the offensive line in this matchup. Defensively is where the Cowboys have major concerns and it’s the side of the ball that makes everyone hesitant in picking them to win the NFC East. Expect everybody to get a look defensively and for the Cowboys to experiment a little bit.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chargers look to return to the playoffs after an improbable run last season with a 9-7 record. The usual guys return for the Chargers such as Phillip Rivers, Antonio Gates and Ryan Matthews, but this will be the first time in a while Rivers has a No. 1 receiver in Keenan Allen. With this experienced core, don’t expect the Chargers to play their offensive starters much in this game. Kellen Clemens is the Chargers backup quarterback after throwing for more than 1,600 yards and eight touchdowns last season with the St. Louis Rams. Defensively, the Chargers have some nice pieces such as Dwight Freeney and Eric Weddle, but they must improve their play in the secondary if this is going to be a successful season.  Like the Cowboys, expect a lot of different guys to get looks defensively.

When you add the home field advantage and the fact Clemons is better than Weeden, I’m going with the Chargers at home to cover the small chalk.
