The New England Patriots and Washington Redskins begin their preseason with a matchup on Thursday.
The Patriots are the same old Patriots heading into this season, as Tom Brady still leads the team now at 38 years old. Brady has much of the same weapons around him, but he won’t have tight end Rob Gronkowski for this game due to him still nursing an injury. The thing to like about the Patriots offense is the most is its backfield with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and James White. All three guys have a chance to make a big impact this season. The Patriots backup quarterback is still Ryan Mallett, a guy who has only thrown four career passes but has the skill set to be a legitimate starting quarterback. Defensively, the Patriots added Darrelle Revis but none of those vets are going to be on the field that long. Watch a guy like Dominique Easley in the second unit, as he was a steal for the Patriots in this year’s draft.

The Redskins are hoping for a bounce back season but of course that all comes down to whether or not Robert Griffin III can stay healthy. A year removed from the injury, RG3 has probably his best team around him with the addition of DeSean Jackson, and guys such as Pierre Garcon and Alfred Morris returning. The Redskins offense has a chance to do some damage if Griffin can remain on the field. The Redskins backup quarterback is Kirk Cousins, who has 1,320 career passing yards and eight touchdowns in two years of limited action. Defensively, the Redskins have the potential to have one of the better defensive backfields in the league, which is led by DeAngelo Hall, Ryan Clark and Brandon Meriweather. The Redskins also have a solid backup linebacker in rookie Trent Murphy.
This is really a tossup, as both teams have backup quarterbacks who could be starters in this league. However, I loved Mallat coming out of college and truly think he’s the best backup QB in the NFL. With the spread being what it is, I’m going with the Patriots on the road.
