The Carolina Panthers host the Buffalo Bills in preseason action on Friday night.
It was a mixed bag for Buffalo in the preseason opener where they fell to the Giants by a 17-13 count. EJ Manuel went 2-7 in a brief appearance with Thaddeus Lewis and Jeff Tuel combing for a 22-33/ 161 yard night with both throwing costly interceptions while Tuel threw for a short touchdown. The game was one of missed opportunities with a 1-3 effort in the red zone although in general for a first game in the preseason it's hard to be negative. The defense did allow a few big plays including a 73 yard TD pass which turned out to be the game winner.

Carolina finally kicks off 2014 with their first preseason contest against visiting Buffalo. Although the casual fan associates the Panthers with quarterback Cam Newton the success of this 12-4 squad of a year ago was on the defensive side of the football. Newton will get a series before having a seat leaving Derek Anderson and Matt Blanchard to get the bulk of the action. The offense needs to improve in most areas so we'll see a little of everything although not much from the starters. As a Philly fan I see Jason Avant at the top of the depth chart at receiver and while he is a solid leader in the locker room he isn't that explosive, stretch the field player so I know Carolina needs help at that position.
I like a team that has already played a game and that means Buffalo who needs to cut back on the mistakes we saw in the HOF game. I think the Bills know Carolina will be trying to attack and will be better be prepared although this is still preseason and anybody's guess what will happen...
