The Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions meet Saturday night at Ford Field in their first preseason game.

The Browns hope they made enough changes on the offensive side of the ball for them to take another step in the right direction. Of course, it all starts with the quarterback and whether Brian Hoyer or Johnny Manziel can fulfill expectations. While everybody is so focused on the Manziel hype, the Browns also made some improvements by adding guys such as Ben Tate, Miles Austin and Nate Burleson. All are veteran players who should help shoulder the load with Josh Gordon’s future up in the air. Another Cleveland offensive player to pay attention to is running back Terrance West, who was a steal in last year’s draft. Defensively, the Browns have a lot of young talent to rely on, including Barkevious Mingo, who should be ready for a breakout season.

Detroit Lions vs. Cleveland Browns NFL Pick, Odds, Prediction - 8/9/14

USA TODAY Sports

It’s no secret the Lions have some of the most explosive offensive weapons in the league, but the lack of experienced depth makes them a scary team to bet on this preseason. Behind quarterback Matthew Stafford is Dan Orlovsky and Kellen Moore, two signal-callers who haven’t thrown a single pass in two years. Besides the lack of experience at quarterback, the Lions do have some interesting pieces such as tight end Eric Ebron, and running backs Joique Bell and Theo Riddick. Riddick is one player who is having a solid training camp. Defensively, Kyle Van Noy should see a lot of reps at strong side linebacker and Don Carey is a solid strong safety backup.

As you could tell from my past articles, I pick preseason games solely based on quarterback depth. There’s no question the Browns have that advantage in this matchup, and you can expect Manziel to see the field quite a bit.

Here’s to Johnny Football making a few plays and putting some cash in our pocket.
