The New England Patriots will be hosting the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday night at Foxboro.
The New England Patriots didn’t get the win in their first preseason game against the Redskins, although I’m pretty sure most people in the organization aren’t overly concerned. The Pats fell to the Redskins 23-6, and never really in the game. The Pats lone score came in the fourth quarter when rookie quarterback Garoppolo threw a 26 yard score to Tyms. The Pats have been reportedly shopping around Mallet this past offseason, but Mallet didn’t look all that strong against the Redskins, which shouldn’t help his stock that much. Mallet was just 5/12 for 55 yards on the night. Garoppolo, who has reportedly struggled in camp, played the best of the two Pats signal callers, completing 9/13 for 157 yards and a score. The ground game for the Pats wasn’t all that effective either, as New England picked up just 63 yards on 24 attempts on the ngiht, with rookie Roy Finch leading the way with 15 yards on just three carries. Starters Shane Vereen and Stevan Ridley saw little action on the night against the ‘Skins.

The Philadelphia Eagles fell to the Bears 34-28 in their preseason opener. The Eagles used four different signal callers on the night against the Bears. In a funny/interesting note, starter Nick Foles had as many interceptions in this game (2) as he had all last season. Foles is going to be the starter here, no doubt, however former Jet Mark Sanchez played well for the Eagles on the night, completing 7/9 for 79 yards on the night. Another former USC Trojan, Matt Barkley saw action for the Eagles as well, completing 7/16 for 73 yards with a score and a pick. LeSean McCoy had just one carry on the night, picking up no yards. The Eagles definitely focused on their passing game against the Bears, rushing the ball just 18 times total on the night. Leading the Eagles on the ground was Tucker, who picked up 40 yards on just 8 carries. Tight end Zach Ertz led the receivers for the Eagles on the night, hauling in for passes on five targets, for 60 yards. Jeremy Maclin had just one reception on one target, for 15 yards, but look for Maclin to have a big role in this offense this year, especially with Desean Jackson out of the picture.
Tough call, as both teams did some nice things in their opener (yes I know the Pats got blown out, but I thought they did some nice things). I’ll take the points with the Eagles here, but this is preseason and who knows what will happen.
