NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 16, 2014
We’re knee-deep in another round of preseason games in the NFL, and as a result the news keeps trickling in. We’ve got a fresh set of headlines and notable players to discuss this morning, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league and see what’s happening out there right now.
Bowe Suspension: Yesterday, we were just talking in this space about how Bowe has been something of a letdown for the Chiefs ever since inking his big contract extension last year. Later in the afternoon we learned that he could stick another dubious feather in his cap, as he’d been suspended by the league for one game due to a marijuana possession arrest.
The incident in question occurred back in November, and Bowe was charged with speeding as well. We’ll have to see if he can bounce back from his run of bad news recently. Last season he posted just 57 catches for 673 yards, and on top of that he’s recovering from a finger injury that’s affecting his ability to catch a football.

Smith Outlook: While we’re on the subject of the Chiefs, let’s move on and take a look at their QB Alex Smith. Though he found quite a bit of moderate success last season, he’s still fighting to shed the dreaded “game manager” tag.
The Chiefs are actively trying to help him do that, as the coaching staff is reportedly working with him on throwing deep passes with more consistency. If Smith can do that--without adding to his interception total--it benefits the offense in a number of ways, from more instances of big plays to more running room for uber-back Jamaal Charles.
Whether or not this plan will work remains to be seen, but it’s an interesting concept.
Cleveland QB Situation: It appears we finally have an end date to the training-camp soap opera that’s been going on in Cleveland.
The Browns will be playing a preseason game on Monday night against the Redskins, with both incumbent Brian Hoyer and upstart rookie Johnny Manziel getting an equal amount of snaps with the first-team offense. The next day, the coaching staff will be making a decision on which QB will begin the regular season as the team’s starter, according to the coaching staff.
Coach Pettine says that the decision will be weighed most heavily on what the staff sees in games, but meeting room impressions, training camp and individual workout performances will be factored in as well.
Whoever wins the job gets the unenviable task of a pretty tough opening schedule for the Browns.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
