NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 21, 2014
Over the course of this 2014 NFL preseason, we’ve seen some pretty interesting things out there on the field so far. We’ve got plenty more to look forward to as the all-important third week gets going, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league and see who’s in the news.
Browns QB Battle: Early yesterday, we got definitive word on what the Browns will be doing with their depth chart at QB. Brian Hoyer was named the team’s starter, and hotshot rookie Johnny Manziel will be backing him up. Cleveland’s first game will be in Pittsburgh.
Much has been made of the QB battle in Cleveland, but by most accounts this is where most people expected things to go. There will be cries for Manziel from the first interception Hoyer throws, or the first loss the Browns record, but for now this is the right decision when it comes to keeping the team focused. Cleveland will likely reevaluate their situation after the bye week, and if things aren’t going well we could see the emergence of Johnny Football.

Watt Contract: Over the past couple of days, much has been made of Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and his contract. This week, Watt was reported as saying that he believes he’s outplayed his rookie deal and would like the Texans to step up and offer him an extension.
Watt still has two years left on his contract, and though he says he’s not involved in talks just yet, he’d be willing to if it came to that. Still, the Texans have a policy of not negotiating deals during the regular season, so if something is going to get hammered out, it had better be soon.
Bell/Blount Charges: Uh-oh. The Pittsburgh backfield has a lot of explaining to do. Both Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount were charged with marijuana possession yesterday as the two were riding in a car with an unidentified female. Bell got the worst of the charges, as he also received a DUI on top of everything else. It's unclear just what the league--and the Steelers--will do to their Nos. 1 and 2 running backs, but suffice to say they don't normally look kindly on off-the-field incidents. We'll keep you posted.
Week 1 Schedule: Now that the schedules have been released, we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we warm up for the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season, which begins September 4.
