NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
August 30, 2014
We’ve got just a handful of days to wait before the kickoff of the 2014 NFL season, and the excitement is building steadily. There are plenty of storylines to visit in the coming days, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league and see what everyone’s up to right now.
Amukamara Update: We got some fresh information on the status of Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara yesterday, so let’s visit with him and see what’s going on there.
After sitting out of practice for nearly two weeks due to a groin strain, Amukamara will be rejoining the team at their session on Monday. It was hoped that he could have returned for the Giants’ final preseason game, but it appears that’s not in the cards. Still, this is great news since he should be available for the start of the regular season.
Amukamara will be a cornerstone of the New York defense; He’s coming off a 2013 in which he posted 85 tackles, one interception and two forced fumbles.

Raiders QB Situation: We’ve been following this developing story this week (and pretty much the whole off-season since the draft), and it’s looking like things are coming to a head.
Raiders veteran QB (and presumed starter) Matt Schaub is currently battling tendinitis in his elbow, a condition that has kept him out of action for the last week or so. He wasn’t able to play in the team’s final preseason game Thursday against Seattle.
Meanwhile, with Schaub out, rookie sensation Derek Carr tossed three touchdowns on 11-of-13 passing, making a strong case for himself in the process.
The Raiders coaching staff has long been clinging to the notion that Schaub will be the starter in Week 1, but these recent developments seem to have their stances softening ever so slightly. The plan is that the team will evaluate Schaub’s elbow on Monday, then make a decision for opening week. We’d put either player’s odds at a coin-flip at this point.
Shorts Status: Let’s finish up today by checking in on Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts. The good news on him is that he’s been quoted as saying that he’s 100 percent and ready for the team’s regular-season opener.
All the way back on July 25 in the Jags’ first practice, Shorts injured his hamstring. He was able to come back to the practice field on the 18th of this month, and has now played in two preseason games.
It looks like Shorts is ready to go; He’ll be trying to better his 2013 stats of 66 catches, 777 yards and three scores (13 games).
Week 1 Schedule: The regular season is (finally) upon us, and we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we anticipate the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season.
