The Packers and Seahawks square off in the NFL season opener on Thursday in what is on paper one of the best games of the season in a rematch of the infamous “Fail Mary” contest.
The Packers take to the road to face off against the defending Super Bowl champions in the unfriendly confines of Century Link Field in what is being billed as a potential NFC Championship preview in a battle of two Super Bowl contenders. Green Bay heads into this season with a ton of promise as they boast one of the best offenses in football with Aaron Rodgers at the helm and the likes of Randall Cobb, Jordy Nelson, and second year sensation Eddie Lacy at his disposal. The Packers also landed highly touted but aging defensive end Julius Peppers who stays in the NFC North after a stint with the Bears and the former North Carolina standout will do his best to lead his new team back to the Super Bowl. There are some question marks defensively in the secondary for the Pack and while they drafted to fill some of those holes with safety Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix coming into the fold it may take the length of the season before Green Bay’s defense can match the talent they have on offense. With that being said their front seven is still strong with AJ Hawks and Clay Matthews in full health and to me the Packers are one of the favourites to win the Lombardi Trophy.

The Seahawks play the Thursday night season opener at home by virtue of winning last year’s Super Bowl and while many expect a championship hangover this Seattle team looks poised more so than many before them to repeat. Seattle has a ridiculous defense that is well documented led by the brash and controversial Richard Sherman but they are so much deeper than the debated face of their unit and they will no question be up neat the top of the ranks defensively this year. On offense the Hawks are just as impressive as Russell Wilson continues to establish himself as a top end quarterback and Marshawn Lynch will carry the bulk of the offense on his back once again despite sitting out in the early going of the preseason due to contract negotiations. The line on this one is just over a field goal at the moment and while it is bound to change it will be interesting to see which team it favours moving closer to kick off and while the Hawks are a very good team I think the Packers are strong as well. I think the better play here is on the total as I think the early part of the season and the hype around the nationally televised stage will play in favour of the defense and running game and as such I think the final line stays under 45 points.
