NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
September 6, 2014
The 2014 NFL season is already off and running, and tomorrow marks the major action with most of the teams in the league out on the field. In the meantime, we’ve got plenty to talk about, so with that said let’s take our daily look around the league and check out some of the players and storylines everyone’s talking about.
Jason Witten Outlook: Veteran Cowboys tight end Jason Witten didn’t do much in the preseason, but that’s not dampening his expectations now that Week 1 is officially upon us.
The Cowboys and 49ers are matched up against each other tomorrow in what should be a pretty high-scoring affair. Both teams have suffered injuries and other assorted setbacks on the defensive side of the ball, which should have the offenses running rampant for much of the game.
Witten in particular is being pegged as a potential breakout in Week 1. The Niners played strong against opposing tight ends in 2013, but with NaVorro Bowman out, the story is likely to be much different.
Witten has a very good level of chemistry with his QB Tony Romo, so don’t be surprised to see these two hooking up early and often during tomorrow’s game.

Orton Signing: Here’s an interesting story out of Buffalo. Now that the team has inked veteran QB Kyle Orton, we’re hearing that there was some dissention in the ranks over adding him to the roster.
Bills head coach Doug Marrone was reportedly opposed to the team’s signing of Orton, and there are rumors that he made his opinions known through a shouting session with team brass.
Orton was brought in (at an admittedly odd time) to provide a stable option behind No. 1 QB EJ Manuel. If the Bills get off to a rocky start on offense, the drama could get ugly.
Bulaga Status: Adding injury to insult on Thursday, the Packers lost two key players during their embarrassing loss to the Seahawks. We got some new information on OT Bryan Bulaga yesterday, and the prognosis seems a little brighter than it potentially could have been.
He sprained his MCL during the game, and as yet there’s no concrete timetable for his return to the field. The good news is that the injury isn’t considered to be too serious. The possibility even exists that Bulaga could return for the Packers’ Week 2 game against the Jets.
The Green Bay players have the weekend off, so we’ll likely get some more info early next week.
Week 1 Schedule: The regular season is (finally) upon us, and we can start looking forward to the on-field action as we anticipate the 2014 campaign. Here’s a look at the first week of the season.
