The Line: Green Bay Packers -9 -- Over/Under: 46 See the Latest Odds

The Green Bay Packers look to rebound from an opening week loss as they host the New York Jets from Lambeau Field in a late afternoon start on CBS.

The New York Jets emerged victorious in week one with a 19-14 win over the Raiders.   The Jets were ultra-efficient on defense in the win, conceding just 25 rushing yards and 151 passing yards.  Quarterback Geno Smith also had some promising statistics, completing 82% of his passes for 221 yards with a TD and an interception.  Smith also had 10 carries for 38 yards and fumbled twice with one being lost.  Eric Decker was Smith’s primary target hauling in five balls for 74 yards.  The Jets backfield looks to be one of the best in the league with Chris Ivory opening the year with a 100 yard day on 10 carrries and Chris Johnson accumulating 68 yards on 13 attempts while also catching five passes for 23 yards.

The Jets defense will have its hands full in week two after a relatively easy week one opponent.   Starting cornerback Dee Milner is listed as questionable for week two after participating in position drills during Wednesday’s practice.   Also of concern is the inexperience of rookie free safety Calvin Pryor while battling a baiting QB like Rodgers.   The Jets do figure to have a matchup edge running the football though after the Packers run defense was exposed by a potent Seattle ground attack in week one.

The Green Bay Packers lost on the opening Thursday of the season, getting pummeled 36-16 by the defending-champion Seahawks.  The Packers had an early lead at 10-7 following a fumble recovery on special teams, but for most of the night Seattle just imposed its physical will on Green Bay.   QB Aaron Rodgers was reasonably efficient in the opener completing 69% of his passes, but the output was meager at just 189 yards with a TD and interception.   Jordy Nelson was the primary target catching nine passes for 83 yards and Randall Cobb added six receptions for 58 yards.

The Packers running game was weak in the opener against a stout Seahawks defense, and the run game doesn’t figure to have much more success against the Jets front here as Eddie Lacy didn’t look good in week one and James Starks has shown durability issues in his short career.  Lambeau should provide a solid boost to the Packers though, which they figure to need in defending the run after allowing 207 yards on the ground to Seattle in week one.

The Packers could certainly issue a beat down at home, but I see the Jets using defense and running the football to slow the game down and keep this manageable.
