The Carolina Panthers and the Chicago Bears face off on Sunday in Carolina in week five NFL action.
The Carolina Panthers got off to a 2-0 start this season after losing in the NFC Playoffs last season but since then they have lost their last two games. The Panthers offense has sputtered scoring just 18.2 points per game which ranks them 28th in the NFL and allowing 327.8 yards per game while defensively they are allowing 24 points per game and 373.8 yards. Cam Newton has completed 63.8 percent of his passes with three touchdowns without throwing an interception. Jonathan Stewart has been forced into full time duty in the Carolina backfield and he is averaging just 3.0 yards per carry with one touchdown. Rookie Kelvin Benjamin is the Panthers leading receiver with 21 catches and three touchdowns and Greg Olsen also has 21 catches. With Greg Hardy out the Panthers defense just doesn’t seem to generate the same pass rush as they have just eight sacks and three interceptions while Luke Keuchly has 46 tackles, Antoine Cason has 28 tackles, and Mario Addison has 3.5 sacks. The Panthers just don’t look like the same team they were the first two games and at the end of last year.

It has been feast or famine this year for the Chicago Bears with their offense either being unstoppable or as we saw last week, the offense not being able to do anything right. The Bears are averaging 23 points per game and 349 yards while defensively they are allowing 25 points and 372.8 yards. Bears QB Jay Cutler just has a wealth of options to work with completing 65.8 percent of his passes for 10 touchdowns and four interceptions. Tight End Martellus Bennett leads all Bears receivers with 29 catches and four touchdowns while Alshon Jeffery has 20 catches and Brandon Marshall has 16. Matt Forte has paced the Chicago ground game averaging 4.0 yards per carry and he also has 24 receptions. The Bears defense has six interceptions, four fumble recoveries, and nine sacks. Ryan Mundy has 24 tackles, Willie Young has four sacks, and Kyle Fuller has three interceptions. It is way too early in he season for the Bears to be too concerned but they clearly have some work to do if they want to compete for a spot in the playoffs.
Carolina is 7-2-1 against the spread in their last 10 home games and 9-3 against the spread against the NFC. Chicago is 7-17-1 against the spread in their last 25 games, 7-19 against the spread against the NFC, and 3-8 against the spread following a game that they didn’t cover the spread. The road team is 4-0-1 against the spread in the last five meetings of these two.
The Panthers have simply not looked good and with a lack of pass rush they are going to be in trouble here as Cutler will be able to get the ball to his long wide receivers.
