2014 NFL Season

TV:

Once the NFL season starts, it never seems to go slowly enough for my liking. But here we are, 6 weeks in. Week 6 was a tough one for quite a few teams around the league from an injury perspective. Losing key players is never easy and some big names went down this week. Today, we’ll break down the most devastating losses.

Top Ten Worst NFL Injuries (Week 6 Edition)

USA TODAY Sports

1. Just when the New England Patriots looked like they were starting to get on-track, they were dealt a couple of blows this weekend. First and foremost, they lost longtime LB Jerod Mayo for the season with a knee injury. This is a major loss that will likely impact the team’s defensive scheme tremendously.

2. RB Darren Sproles, who is a key part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense, sprained (rather than tore, thankfully) his MCL on Sunday. Sproles is likely to miss a few weeks, which puts Chip Kelly and Co. in something of a bind. LeSean McCoy is currently the only healthy RB on their roster.

3. Alex Mack, C for the Cleveland Browns (who I can no longer make fun of and am legitimately worried about losing to in December), is out for the season with a broken fibula and a broken ankle. Ouch. Mack is one of my personal favorite players at his position and this is a massive blow to the Brownies, who’ll have to scramble to find a replacement.

4. The New York Giants salsa-dancing WR, Victor Cruz, was carted off the field during Sunday’s primetime loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Cruz, who appeared to be in absolute agony, apparently suffered a torn patellar tendon. This will end his season, which means Eli Manning will have to rely largely on rookie Odell Beckham Jr., who has, fortunately, showed promise.

5. I said the Pats were dealt a couple of bad cards; this is the second. RB Stevan Ridley (who will be a free agent after this season) tore both his ACL and MCL on Sunday. Needless to say, Ridley’s out for the remainder of the year. Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden should be able to pick-up the slack, but it’s still a rough hand.

6. Dee Milliner, CB for the New York Jets, tore his Achilles during Sunday’s loss to the Denver Broncos. He’ll be out for the season, if you hadn’t guessed that already. This is a position where the Jets don’t have much depth, so losing Milliner is a blow to their already struggling pass D.

7. Denver Broncos LB Danny Trevathan left Sunday’s win over the New York Jets with a knee injury. Trevathan has been a force on the Broncos D for the past couple of seasons, so hopefully he won’t miss a huge amount of time. No word yet from the Broncos’ camp regarding his status.

8. Cincinnati Bengals WR AJ Green's toe injury is likely to keep him out for at least a week. While I never like to see a player hurt, this isn’t terrible news in my book. I wouldn’t mind a chance to play the Bengals without Green on the turf. Since his injury isn’t severe, though, Green ought to be back in the line-up soon and Mohamed Sanu certainly stepped up to the plate in Week 6, so take heart Cincy fans.

9. Byron Maxwell, CB for the Seattle Seahawks, is starting full-time for the first time this year. Maxwell suffered a calf strain during Sunday’s shocking loss to the Cowboys and is expected to miss a couple of weeks. The Seahawks D has looked disturbingly, well, average, as the team has gone 2-2 over the course of the past month. I don’t think it’s an altogether bad thing that more will be expected of Richard Sherman with Maxwell out.

10. Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick aggravated an existing hamstring issue and had to leave Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Vikings. With Reggie Bush set to return next week, Riddick’s absence shouldn’t be too noticeable, but he did prove he can handle the pressure upon his return to health.
