New England Patriots vs. New York Jets - 10/16/14 NFL Pick, Odds, Prediction

New York Jets (1-5) at New England Patriots (4-2)

NFL Football: Thursday

The Line: New England Patriots -10 -- Over/Under: 45 See the Latest Odds

The New York Jets and New England Patriots meet Thursday night at Gillette Stadium.

The New York Jets have lost five straight games and pretty much all but ended any hope of making the playoffs. The issue for the Jets all starts at the quarterback position, as Geno Smith is completing only 57.1 percent of his passes for six touchdowns and seven interceptions. Smith has thrown at least one interception in every game this season and the Jets are 5-14 SU when he throws at least one pick. The Jets have only two receivers with more than 200 receiving yards and Eric Decker has scored in back-to-back games. The Jets ground game is really their only consistent form of offense, as Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory have combined for 525 yards and three touchdowns. The Jets have scored 21 or less points in 10 of their last 13 games. Defensively, the New York Jets are allowing 26.3 points, 327.2 yards, and they’ve forced three turnovers and 19 sacks. Dawan Landry leads the Jets with 54 tackles and Muhammad Wilkerson has four sacks.

The New England Patriots have won back-to-back games and seem to be back on track in the AFC East. Tom Brady has bumped his completion percentage to 62.7 percent and has thrown six touchdowns and zero interceptions in his last two games. All of a sudden guys such as Tim Wright and Brian Tyms are catching touchdown passes, as the Pats are just doing the best with what they have at the moment. Still, Rob Gronkowski has scored in three straight games and is slowly returning to normal form. The Patriots ground game is averaging 3.7 yards per carry, and Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen have combined for more than 500 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, the New England Patriots are allowing 21.5 points, 319.5 yards, and they’ve forced 14 turnovers and 15 sacks. Jerod Mayo leads the Patriots with 53 tackles and Rob Ninkovich has four sacks.

The Jets are 1-4-2 ATS in their last 7 road games and 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Patriots are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 home games and 1-4 ATS vs. a team with a losing record. The road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.

Three of the last four games between these two teams have been decided by three points. While the Jets aren't the most gifted team offensively, they do have what it takes defensively to give Tom Brady fits. Remember, Rex Ryan has a long history of facing Brady and knows just what buttons to push to frustrate him a bit. Give me the New York Jets and the points, especially on a short week.
