It’s a little strange not having a Thursday night NFL game this week, but we suppose it’s a good thing in the long run to get us ready for the playoffs. Speaking of playoffs, there’s plenty to go over as we head into Week 17, so let’s check out a few of the headlines.

Dez Bryant’s negotiations on a contract extension in Dallas have been a long-term soap opera for the team, and the situation doesn’t seem to be getting much better. Bryant, who is the team’s No. 1 wideout, will be a free agent at the end of this year if the two sides don’t come to terms before then.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said yesterday that the team would use the franchise tag on Bryant if necessary, so it looks like he’ll be staying in Dallas for at least the next year regardless.
Bryant has 84 receptions for 1,221 yards in what has been a stellar year for him.

NFL News: Player News and Updates for 12/24/14

The Chargers’ Philip Rivers should be healthy enough to play in the Week 17 finale against the Chiefs. He’s got a bulging disc in his lower back he’s trying to get over, however.
Rivers was the spark in San Diego’s improbable comeback victory last weekend, tossing 356 yards and four touchdowns. That gives him 31 scores to 16 interceptions over a 15-game period.

The Chiefs’ Dwayne Bowe was out of practice yesterday; he’s dealing with a sprained shoulder. Bowe was hurt in the Week 16 game against Pittsburgh.
Jason Avant figures to get an up-tick in usage if Bowe can’t go, but it’s not like the Chiefs utilize their wide receivers all that much anyway.

The Jets’ Percy Harvin, who is one of the few standout talents on the offense, had to sit out of practice yesterday. He’s nursing a rib injury sustained in the Week 16 loss to the Patriots.
The Jets will finish up against the Dolphins on Sunday. Currently, New York is sitting in the No. 4 draft position and could move up to No. 3 with a loss and a Jacksonville win.

Mixed news for the Colts today. TE Dwayne Allen was out of practice on Tuesday due to a knee injury. That means a bigger workload for Coby Fleener if Allen can’t go in Tennessee this weekend.
Also, T.Y. Hilton was able to practice during yesterday’s session. He missed out on the Dallas blowout loss due to a hamstring injury.
Hilton has 82 grabs for 1,345 yards so far this year.
