NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
February 4, 2015
Even with the next key dates for the NFL weeks away, there’s still a steady stream of news and information emerging from the league on a daily basis. With that in mind, let’s check out some of the notable players and storylines out there right now.
Richard Sherman’s much talked-about elbow might not end up needing to go under the knife after all. It was originally reported that the Seahawks CB would need Tommy John surgery to correct the torn ligaments in his elbow, but yesterday Seattle coach Pete Carroll said Sherman “isn’t a pitcher” and might not end up needing the procedure.
Regardless of if Sherman goes under the knife or not, he’s set to be ready for the season. After his child is born the team will reevaluate things and figure out what to do going forward.

The presence of new head coach Jack Del Rio in Oakland should bode well for RB Maurice Jones-Drew’s chances of staying on the team. The two were together for six years with the Jacksonville Jaguars and reportedly got along well.
Jones-Drew is an expensive backup right now, carrying a $2.5 million cap hit behind Latavius Murray. If he’s willing to restructure, the team may end up keeping him for the 2015 season.
Now let’s head over to Cleveland and check out the Browns backfield. Heading into 2015, Isaiah Crowell seems to have a slight edge over Terrance West as the lead back. Sources close to the team say Crowell has the belief of his teammates that he’s the more talented player.
Crowell and West posted similar stats in 2014, with Crowell holding the edge in YPC and touchdowns, while West put up more yards. The two may end up having to contend with a veteran RB in the mix if the Browns elect to add some depth via free agency.
Let’s finish up today with a look at up-and-comer DeAndre Hopkins of the Texans. In his first two seasons with the team, he’s posted 128 catches for 2,012 yards and eight scores, which is pretty remarkable considering Houston’s QB troubles.
Interestingly enough, Hopkins’ stats are comparable to Texans legend Andre Johnson, who had 145 catches for 2,118 yards and 10 touchdowns in his first two years. Considering that, it would seem Hopkins has a bright future ahead of him.
