NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
March 1, 2015
We’ve reached another NFL-less Sunday in the off-season, but we’ve got lots to look forward to this month. The league year officially begins in just nine days, and we’ll see lots of free agent moves shortly thereafter. In the meantime, let’s check in on some of the headlines today.
After much speculation down in Dallas, it’s looking like the Cowboys will be using their franchise tag on WR Dez Bryant today.
The tag will come if the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal before today’s deadline. According to sources close to the situation, that’s not all that likely to happen.
Bryant is coming off an 88-catch, 1,320-yard season that produced 16 touchdowns.

We got some specifics on QB Josh McCown’s new contract with the Browns yesterday. The deal will pay him $14 million over a period of three years, with incentives building that number to potentially as high as $20 million.
The Panthers won’t be re-signing DE Greg Hardy, according to sources close to the team. He’ll be a free agent with everyone else on March 10.
Hardy comes with some baggage for prospective teams. He missed out on much of last year due to legal troubles.
Houston linebacker Brian Cushing has been no stranger to the operating table this off-season. He’s had a reported three surgeries since the end of the year. The procedures include work on his wrist, knee and ankle.
Two of the surgeries were arthroscopic, and says the wrist is healing well. We’ll see how he looks at the beginning of the season.
The Niners are reportedly set to be releasing WR Steve Johnson, according to sources. This appears to be mostly a cap-space move, which will save San Francisco $5.5 million against the cap.
