Position: Running Back
Career Stats: 3,519 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns
Strengths: Duke Johnson has excellent vision, as he sees the hole and hits it with great explosion. There’s a reason why Duke played such a role on special teams as well. He sees the field extremely well and knows where he’s going to go before it happens. Duke Johnson is just such an electric runner, as he can change direction without losing much speed. He has a second gear that he’s able to hit when he gets into the open field. Duke also plays bigger than what he really is and doesn’t mind playing dinged up if need be. Also, the thing I love most about Duke Johnson is that he’s a great receiver. Duke caught 27 or more passes in two of his three seasons at Miami.
Weaknesses: Duke isn’t much of a power back at all and is actually undersized for his position. You sometimes question if Johnson could be a three-down back, especially considering he has a ways to go in the blocking department. I’d expect Duke to add a few more pounds to his frame to improve his durability, as I’m not sure he could last a 16 game season at his current size. Lack of weight, power and ability to block really tie in together as far as his main weaknesses are concerned.
Projection: Duke Johnson is going to be a steal for an NFL team as early as the second round. Duke can contribute right away and could be that home run hitter for a team that’s looking for a spark on the offensive side of the ball. You should be thrilled if your team lands this explosive runner from the Hurricanes.
