2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Bryce Petty

USA TODAY Sports

Height: 6’3”

Weight: 230

Position: Quarterback

Career Stats: 845 passing attempts, 8,195 passing yards, 62 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Strengths: Bryce Petty has the prototypical NFL size you like to see at the quarterback position. Petty doesn’t have the strongest arm in the world, but he has enough arm strength to push the ball downfield and make just about every throw in the route tree. Not the greatest athlete, but Petty does have enough athleticism to where he can roll out of the pocket and buy himself more time. Bryce Petty also understands when to put a little zip on the ball and when to take a little mustard off and deliver more touch. Petty is a great leader and has a high football IQ, as he learned a lot being Robert Griffin III’s backup for a couple of seasons.

Weaknesses: Petty’s confidence can be rattled a bit when struggling. Petty can also predetermine where he’s going to go with the football and spent his entire career in the shotgun formation. While healthy for much of his career, Petty suffered a back injury that limited him throughout the 2014 season.

Projection: Bryce Petty should be selected in the third or fourth round, as he has some positive traits that an NFL team can build around. Petty needs to go to a team that already has a reliable QB so he can sit for a couple of seasons. However, once Petty learns how to go through his progressions quicker and adapts to the NFL speed, he could be a serviceable quarterback who could have a decent career as a Rex Grossman-type player.
