USA TODAY Sports
Position: Running Back
Career Stats: 866 rushing attempts, 4,682 rushing yards and 49 rushing touchdowns.
Strengths: David Johnson is a shifty runner who can make some sweet moves and make defenders miss. Johnson is a confident runner who runs hard and wants the ball in his hands, even in clutch moments. Johnson always falls forward and does a nice job of changing direction in space. Johnson is a solid route runner and one of the top pass catchers in this class, hauling in 141 receptions at UNI. Johnson plays with an edge considering he’s been doubted since high school. Johnson has experience in kick return coverage. David Johnson has a strong work ethic and zero off-the-field issues to worry about.
Weaknesses: David Johnson has questionable vision and can sometimes end plays early due to making unnecessary moves. Johnson can fall down easily despite his big frame. Johnson doesn’t have great top end speed once he gets in the open field. Johnson didn’t play the best competition, which is always a concern.
Projection: David Johnson is pretty much the complete package, as he has the size, quickness and is one of the best receiving running backs in this class. You can do a lot of things with Johnson and many think he’s the diamond in the rough in this year’s class. I’d have no problem spending a third round pick on this kid.
