NFL Updates: News From Around the League, Off-Season Schedule and More
May 1, 2015
Round 1 of the 2015 NFL Draft is all finished up, and we’ll be rolling into Round 2 today. While we’re waiting, let’s check out some of the notable news items and player scenarios out there in the headlines.
The Titans picked up rookie QB Marcus Mariota with the second overall pick in last night’s draft, which surprised absolutely no one.
What also isn’t too surprising is that the Titans are planning on starting him right away. This puts Zach Mettenberger--who completed 59.8 percent of his throws with eight touchdowns and seven picks last year--as the team’s backup.

Also providing some roster drama last night was the Rams’ selection of running back Todd Gurley at No. 10 overall.
This puts St. Louis pretty stacked at running back, with Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham and Zac Stacy each on the depth chart as well.
Stacy reportedly plans to ask the team for a trade or an outright release in the wake of this draft. We’ll see if they accommodate him.
Let’s check out a couple of fifth-year options exercised this week from a couple of different teams in the league. First there’s Ryan Tannehill, who is now locked up with the Dolphins through the 2016 season.
Tannehill will get $16 million in that fifth year. He’s coming off a 2014 during which he tossed for 4,045 yards (a career-best) with 27 scores and 12 picks.
Then there’s Arizona WR Michael Floyd, who had his fifth-year option picked up this week as well.
Floyd will be with the Cards through 2016; he had 47 grabs for 841 yards and six scores last season.
