I’ve spent my entire life fascinated by the quarterback position and the wide variety of ways that players become great at it. While I love a good pocket passer as much as the next girl, rushing quarterbacks have always been my favorites. Today, we’re going to take a look at the QBs who’ve racked-up the top ten most rushing yards in NFL history.

Top Ten Rushing Quarterbacks in NFL History

1. Randall Cunningham was on the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster for 11 of his 16 NFL seasons and he was impressive during every single one of them. Cunningham could play just about any position and had 4,928 rushing yards during his career.

2. Steve Young, who spent 13 of his 15 years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers, rushed for 4,239 total yards. Young also won 6 passing titles during his time in the league.

3. Michael Vick, most known for his pre-arrest years with the Atlanta Falcons, has rushed for 3,954 yards during his career. Vick was the first QB in NFL history to have a 1,000-yard rushing season.

4. Nobody will be surprised to see this name in today’s top five. Fran Tarkenton, who played the vast majority of his 18-year career with the Minnesota Vikings, rushed for 3,674 total yards. Tarkenton also had 47,003 passing yards, clocking over 50,000 yards of total offense before his retirement.

5. Steve McNair, who tragically passed away in Nashville, remains one of the Tennessee Titans’ most famous players. McNair had 3,590 rushing yards during his time as an NFL QB.

6. The Denver Broncos’ longtime QB (and current GM) John Elway may have found himself on the ground a lot (he holds the league record with 516 sacks endured), but he could also move. Elway racked-up 3,407 rushing yards over the course of his career.

7. Donovan McNabb, most famed for his tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles, never failed to put on a show on Sundays. In addition over over 30,000 passing yards and upwards of 200 touchdown passes, McNabb had 3,249 rushing yards during his time in the NFL.

8. During his time as QB of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kordell Stewart averaged 5.2-yards a carry. That’s more than some RBs in recent memory (ahem, Trent Richardson). Stewart had 2,874 rushing yards overall.

9. Jim “Captain Comeback” Harbaugh, who played for the Chicago Bears, the Indianapolis Colts, the Baltimore Ravens, the San Diego Chargers, and the Carolina Panthers, had 2,787 rushing yards during his career.

10. Greg Landry, most famed for his 11 years with the Detroit Lions, rushed for 2,655 yards over the course of his 15-year NFL career. Landry was known for calling his own number in the huddle.
