The Dallas Cowboys and San Diego Chargers play Thursday preseason football at Qualcomm Stadium.
The Dallas Cowboys head into the preseason with heavy expectations once again. The Cowboys starting offense shouldn’t see a ton of playing time with Dez Bryant, Tony Romo and the rest of the gang already on the same page. That means a lot of playing time for Brandon Weeden and Dustin Vaughan throwing to guys such as James Hanna and Devin Street. Defensively, the Cowboys are healthy for the first time in a while, as Mark Nzeocha is the only serious injury to worry about. Other than that, the Cowboys should be ready to go, including linebacker Sean Lee who is coming off a torn ACL. As far as preseason is concerned, I’m keeping an eye on the talented rookies Byron Jones and Randy Gregory, as they have the potential to be immediate contributors.

The San Diego Chargers hope to take that next step after winning nine or less games for five straight seasons. Like the Cowboys, the Chargers are pretty much set offensively with Philip Rivers, Malcom Floyd and Keenan Allen holding down the fort. We’re going to see a lot of backup QB Kellen Clemens, and an exciting running back duo of Melvin Gordon and Danny Woodhead that has the potential to really turn some heads. Defensively, the Chargers are young and may play some of their starters a little more than usual. Manti Te'o, Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes and Jahleel Addae are just some of the starters who are entering their fourth or less season. Denzel Perryman is a defensive player to keep an eye on, a hard-hitting linebacker out of Miami.
The Cowboys are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Chargers are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 home games and 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The road team is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 meetings.
The Chargers have a deep, deep running back core that could be the deciding factor to this game. The backup QB spots are a wash in my eyes, but having Gordon and Woodhead playing the second and third quarter leads me to giving the Chargers the edge.
