The NFL season is down to its final two weeks which means that division titles are starting to be crowned, the wild card races are heating up, and NFL Survivor Pools are coming to an end. Here are this week’s top plays, pool breakers, and pool makers.
USA TODAY Sports
Kansas City Chiefs vs Cleveland Browns
The Chiefs’ impressive run continues at home against the hapless Chiefs as their quest for a wild card spot gets much closer. Kansas City has gone on a tear after starting the season 1-5 and look like a legitimate contender in the AFC as they have an efficient offense led by playoff performer Alex Smith, a defense that is among the best in the NFL, and a coach in Andy Reid who knows how to win the big game. The Browns meanwhile are playing out the string and with Johnny Manziel behind centre I expect this Chiefs defense to feast and the home crowd to play a huge role.
Seattle Seahawks vs St. Louis Rams
Another team that is red hot after a sluggish start is the Seattle Seahawks and while they are playing against their division rivals here who always seem to play them tough I think this one will be very different. The Hawks are trending upwards while the Rams have sputtered after a decent start and will be in tough against Russell Wilson who is playing the best football of his career. The Hawks are without Marshawn Lynch and Thomas Rawls which hurts but with Wilson running the show I think any plug in option will work and I think the Seahawks absolutely dismantle the Rams in this one.
Detroit Lions vs San Francisco 49ers
The Lions are heating up as some players seem to be auditioning for jobs next season and that includes Matt Stafford who has been the centre of trade speculation for the better part of the season. The Niners meanwhile are still an absolute mess and will be in the running for a top draft pick and while Blaine Gabbert has actually looked pretty good at times I don’t think he is the answer long term in the Bay Area. Detroit should close out the season with some success and that starts at home here against the Niners.
New England Patriots at New York Jets
This is shaping up to be the most exciting game of the weekend as the home side desperately needs to get a win to keep pace in the wild card hunt while the Pats still have the AFC’s top seed in reach. Ne England has been battling injuries all season and while it looks like another week without Julian Edelman they do have Rob Gronkowski who is among the best receiving options in the NFL, and James White who has stepped up his game in the absence of LaGarette Blount and Dion Lewis. The Jets though have been turning it up of late and Ryan Fitzpatrick has made people forget about Geno Smith as he is having a career season and certainly gives the Jets the best chance to win. With this game beign played in New York and so much on the line I would suggest staying away from it as I think it is a toss up at best and should be a very exciting game to watch.
Chicago Bears at Tampa Bay Bucs
This is a tough game to look at as neither team will be playoff bound but both have a lot to prove after nice stretches during the regular season. The Bears are at a cross roads as they will likely be without Matt Forte next year which means it could be Jeremy Langford time for the rest of the year while the Bucs made some strides this season as the chemistry between Jameis Winston and Mike Evans is exciting to watch. This game should come down to the wire as Jay Cutler should be the difference maker one way or another and I would suggest staying well away from this one.
Miami Dolphins vs Indianapolis Colts
This may come as a bit of a surprise based on how last week went for the Miami Dolphins but I love them this week against a hapless Colts side. Miami was trounced by the Chargers in San Diego and really put an exclamation in a disappointing season but it gives us all the more incentive to back them this week as they return home against a team that could very well be starting their third string quarterback. The Colts desperately need to win this one but with Miami’s defense underachieving of late, the game being played in Miami, the Dolphins coming off a train wreck of an effort, and Charlie Whitehurst suiting up this game is a great time to back the Dolphins.
